| Preserve Funding for Main Street & Elm Street |
The State Senate has approved a state budget that zeros out the Main
Street and Elm Street program for the 2009/2010 fiscal year. The state
House and the Governor have presented budgets that continue the Main
Street and Elm Street funding at the current level of $7,000,000 each. Now the negotiations begin. We
need to make sure that the residents, business and property owners
across the state speak up and let our elected officials know how these programs have a positive impact on our communities. Each
year, the Main Street and Elm Street managers in all the designated
communties across the state track private and public investments, new
business start ups and closings, new jobs created and jobs lost and
volunteer hours and their value. Consequently, we can show
that for every dollar that the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania invested
statewide in the Main Street program, we returned $9 in private and
public investment.Locally, several major projects that were
completed last year increased our return to $66 for every dollar. Not
bad. The state invested $155,000 last year and we leveraged
$10,320,000. Don't we wish our IRAs returned such a ratio?Add
to that, 96 new jobs created, 12 new businesses, 12 building projects
and 11 vacant storefronts filled and we had a good year. Next year, if
the funding is not restored, we could be singing another song. You
can help us get out the word. Send a letter (specifically for residents and for business owners or an email), get your
friends, family and neighbors to sign a petition. We have attached them
all to this email. Return the petition by June 1 so we can
get them to Harrisburg and into the hands of the leaders who are
negotiating and our local representatives! Any resident of
Pennsylvania can sign the petition. Thanks.

Give Us An Hour or Two
|
We have an opportunity to to get our petition in front of a large number of local citizens but we do not have enough people to man all the booths. On Tuesday, May 19, we can put pop up tents at the polls for people to sign our petition of support after they vote. With two towns, we have five polls. All we ask is that you sign up to work at the poll for an hour or two. Erika has the master schedule. Email her to sign up for a time slot at your poll. Greet your neighbors and ask them to sign the petition to support Souderton Telford Main Street and the restoration of the state funding. We could also use two more tents. We have access to two pop ups and one slightly more complicated one to assemble. |
