| Jean's "Living on the Cheap" | | (A collection of easy to accomplish ideas to save a few pennies). Your ideas would be welcomed as we continue to try to help each other!
RULES: Ideas must not require a purchase, and must not be something we've all heard a bazillion times before ("turn out the light").
"SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF"
As the winter time approaches, do some OBVIOUS THINGS!
Check your windows to make sure they are shut tight (and locked, if possible). Still breezy? A little rope caulk (not the sticky kind--you'll appreciate not having this next spring when you try to take it off!) around the edges can be applied in minutes. Not only will this make your home more comfortable, but will also help keep your heating bill in check.
How about your car battery? If we have to call for service because the car won't start...
|
| Diabetes Corner: "Sweat the Small Stuff" | | Take a tip from self-service restaurant buffets. Many use tongs or tiny spoons to serve the expensive foods--making it difficult to take large servings (think seafood!).
At home, try using larger serving spoons for the "good stuff" (vegetables)! Make it more difficult to fill your plate with less healthy foods by using small spoons. The spoons will also serve as a gentle reminder about what you're eating.
Several small changes in the way we eat can result in large changes over time.
The same goes for exercise--a few minutes of moving about each day is better than not moving at all.
|
| The Starting Gate (for those starting dialysis in the near future) | | "SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF"
Make it easy on yourself!
1- Move a piece of furniture out of the "path."
2- Do you have to stand on your head to plug something in because something is in the way?
3- How about installing a night light?
4- Consider using a tub or shower chair. (The SHC often has chairs to loan free of charge: 330-722-1900, 330-336-2045, or 330-225-4202
5- Do you have a "spare" set of keys? This will save hours of aggravation!
6- A friend is very petite (4'6"). She says she is always on tip-toe to reach everything. Now in her 70s, the reach is harder for her as (as she says) she is shrinking. She often thought she should have her kitchen counters lowered, but felt the cost was prohibitive. She discovered a sturdy, wide "step" (as in step aerobics) at a garage sale and put it in a strategic spot in her kitchen. She uses the step when she is preparing meals. She can chop vegetables, for example, and maintain a more normal (thus comfortable) posture. Now, she wonders why she didn't think of this before, and is on the lookout for another step!
Think of other small steps to make life easier and safer!

Analgesic Nephropathy (Painkillers and the Kidneys)
| | An analgesic is any medicine intended to relieve pain. Over-the-counter analgesics-that is, painkillers available without a prescription-include aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, naproxen sodium, and others. These drugs present no danger for most people when taken in the recommended dosage. But some conditions make taking even these common painkillers dangerous for the kidneys. Also, taking one of these drugs regularly over a long period of time may increase the risk for kidney problems. Most drugs that can cause kidney damage are excreted only through the kidneys. That is, they are not broken down by the liver, as alcohol is, or passed out of the body through the digestive tract. Analgesic use has been associated with two different forms of kidney damage: acute renal failure and a type of chronic kidney disease called analgesic nephropathy.
Acute Kidney Failure Some patient case reports have attributed incidents of sudden-onset acute kidney failure to the use of over-the-counter painkillers, including aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen sodium. Some of these patients experienced acute illnesses involving fluid loss or decreased fluid intake. Other patients in these reports had risk factors such as systemic lupus erythematosus, advanced age, chronic kidney disease, or recent heavy alcohol consumption. These cases involved a single dose in some instances and generally short-term analgesic use of not more than 10 days. Acute kidney failure requires emergency dialysis to clean the blood. Kidney damage is frequently reversible, with normal kidney function returning after the emergency is over and the analgesic use is stopped.
Analgesic Nephropathy A second form of kidney damage, called analgesic nephropathy, can result from taking painkillers every day for several years. Analgesic nephropathy is a chronic kidney disease that over years gradually leads to irreversible kidney failure and the permanent need for dialysis or a kidney transplant to restore kidney function. Researchers estimate that four out of 100,000 people will develop analgesic nephropathy. It is most common in women over 30.
The painkiller phenacetin has been taken off the market because of its association with analgesic nephropathy. Recent studies have suggested that longstanding daily use of analgesics such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen may also increase the risk of chronic kidney damage, but this evidence is not as clear.
People with conditions that put them at risk for acute kidney failure should check with their health care provider before taking any analgesic medicine. People who take over-the-counter painkillers regularly should check with their primary care physician to make sure the drugs are not hurting their kidneys. More information is available by calling the Kidney Foundation (330) 722-9300 X 204 or email: Info@MCKF.org.
