Samaritans has recently launched a new campaign aimed at making Boston happier! That's because, at Samaritans, we believe that by making sure that peoples' voices are heard, we help them feel better about themselves and their lives. In our experience, when people are heard, they go from feeling overwhelmed to empowered, from discouraged to encouraged, from feeling all alone to being part of a bigger community. We accomplish this through services that emphasize confidential, nonjudgmental, and compassionate listening.
The campaign officially began on Saturday, September 22nd at the Boston Red Sox home game against the Baltimore Orioles with a "Hi Five in the 5th Inning" when during the break between the top and bottom of the 5th inning the announcer asked everyone to turn to the person next to them and say "hi" and give them a "high five" which brought people together to share their voice and make Boston a happier place.
And on Saturday September 29th our community came together at Samaritans' 14th Annual 5K Run/Walk which made Boston a happier place by giving the people the opportunity to recognize their loved ones in a public and beautiful way. Boston's Mayor Thomas Menino was on hand to help hand out oranges and share the positive vibe of the campaign. For more information please go to www.happierboston.org. There will continue to be new and different "social experiments" taking place throughout our community in the year ahead and we look forward to sharing with you the happiness that will be delivered by Samaritans!
Thank you!

The Giving Common Challenge
Samaritans believes that a happier Boston can be enhanced by a strong philanthropic community and we're pleased to announce that we will be participating in the Boston Foundation's Giving Common Challenge. Over the course of the next 36 hours (beginning at 8:00 a.m. on October 10th and extending to 8:00 p.m. on October 11th) we are joining with more than 500 other local nonprofits to raise money together and compete for prizes that range from $1,000 to $25,000. If we are one of the first 10 nonprofits to get 50 donors, we will win a $1,000 prize. If we raise more funds than other nonprofits, we have a chance to win a grand prize of $25,000! A donation of $25 made through the Giving Common website could make all the difference so please check it out now!
How can you help?
- Spread the word: tell your friends that you have given to Samaritans during the Giving Common Challenge and that you need their help.
- Post to your wall on Facebook and reach out to followers on Twitter and let them know about the Challenge and how their donations can help us win time-based and grand prizes!
- Watch the leaderboard on the Giving Common website, so that you can see our progress throughout the day and help us promote our organization.
- If you cannot afford to give, spread the news about how our work has influenced you to motivate your friends to give.

Members of the 2012 Marathon Team |
If you like the 5K, you'll love the Marathon! We are so fortunate and thankful to the John Hancock Boston Marathon Non-Profit Program which has granted ten marathon numbers to Samaritans for the 2013 Boston Marathon to be held on Monday, April 15th. We would love to hear from members of our extended community who would like to be considered for one of these valuable bib numbers. If you are interested, please download our Marathon Team application form, and return to Garrett Owen by November 9th.
We are also looking for individuals who have already secured a Boston Marathon bib number to join our team! If you have qualified to run Boston (or obtained a bib number through another source), and would like to make your marathon experience more meaningful by training, running and fundraising with the Samaritans Team, we would love to hear from you! Please contact Marathon Team Coordinator, Garrett Owen, at 617-536-2460 or gowen@samaritanshope.org with questions or comments about joining our team.
