Aging News and Notes
August 2012
Welcome to the Gerontology Institute's E-Newsletter!

As Director of the Ithaca College Gerontology Institute, I am pleased to introduce you to our e-newsletter, which we plan to publish monthly. This is an exciting time for the ICGI. Over the past year we've transitioned to become part of the Ithaca College School of Humanities and Sciences, as well as hired several talented and enthusiastic new staff. (List of faculty and staff) We're looking forward to maintaining the high-quality programs we have offered over the years, as well as developing new initiatives aimed at improving the lives of older people and those who support them. Please send us your feedback about the newsletter by e-mailing pdavis@ithaca.edu to let us know what you like, what you don't, and what you'd like to see more of.

Warm regards,

Rhoda Meador, Director

Film/Concert Presentation on Surviving Stroke: Marc Black at IC on 9/11/2012
stroke of genius CD cover

The School of Health Sciences and Human Performance and the Ithaca College Gerontology Institute will co-present a live music performance and the 'Stroke of Genius' documentary on Tuesday, Sept. 11, at 6:30 p.m. in Textor 102. The film, directed by Bahman Soltani, is an inspiring look at how Dan Mountain, a successful advertising writer from Venice Beach, California, turned his massive stroke into blessings for his community, his family, and himself.

He wrote poetry about his experience which his friend, singer songwriter, Marc Black, put to music and recorded with help from Art Garfunkel, John Sebastian, The Dixie Hummingbirds, and Steve Gadd, among others. Marc will perform songs off the CD, live, before introducing the 'Stroke of Genius' documentary.

Following the film, Marc Black and a panel of IC faculty will hold a question and answer session.

Ardie Bennett: Longview Resident and

Volunteer Extraordinaire

Ardie

At the Gerontology Institute, we are fortunate to get to know many older people who inspire us to make the most of our lives, no matter what age we attain. These people's journeys to this later stage of life are varied and often complex, and in this short space we can capture only a snapshot in time of each person. Yet, we hope that introducing you to some of the people we've met will help you understand why gerontology/aging studies can be so rewarding.  To read the interview with Ardie Bennett, click here.
