If you haven't been to a GIPHCC meeting, October's meeting will be an excellent time to get back into the practice. The GIPHCC luncheons are a good way to catch up on industry topics and network with others. Please plan to be an active member of GIPHCC in 2012-2013.

Beware of Power Lines

Keep people, tools, and equipment (other than cranes or derricks used in construction) at least 10 feet away from overhead power lines carrying up to 50kV. Review your emergency plan for power line contact. Assume all overhead lines are energized and potentially dangerous. If your equipment contacts a power line, have someone call 911.

If your equipment contacts a power line, stay on the equipment and warn others away. Move the equipment away from the line, if you can do so safely. Stay on the equipment until utility workers say it's safe to get off. Warn others to stay away. Anyone on the ground who touches the equipment may be injured or killed. Have someone call 911. If fire or other imminent danger forces you off, do not touch the equipment and the ground at the same time. Jump clear, land with your feet together, and shuffle away with small steps, keeping your feet together and on the ground at all times.

A spotter will help you stay clear of overhead lines. Work with a spotter whose only responsibility is to keep you and your equipment a safe distance from overhead lines and other hazards. If a crane hits an overhead power line, workers on the ground are in the most danger; electricity can travel through the tag ine and through you. Rely on a designated spotter. The Indiana PHCC state convention is coming up in a couple of weeks; have you reserved your spot yet? I'm looking forward to attending for the camaraderie, networking, education, and a day off work. Why are you attending? Why are you not attending? This event has taken a year to plan, so please get signed up and meet us in Indianapolis. You will be happy that you did. Also, we are having the golf outing in Lebanon (great little town) this year on Thursday before the convention and would like to see you there as well.

2012 Goal: Met & Exceeded!

In October of 2011 we set goals for the coming year. One of those goals was 5 new contractor members and 5 new associate members.
