Coaching is nothing new in the world of management development, but we find that many leaders still misunderstand this fundamental skill.
Coaching can be used in a variety of situations. Most often employed to help employees who are struggling in their jobs, it is equally valid as a developmental tool. The wise coach understands that his/her role is not to provide the answers -- but to ask the right questions, listen between the lines, and help the coachee arrive at his/her own solutions.
(And we have a secret to tell you . . . coaching isn't just for managers. Shhh.) That's right. Anyone can function as a coach to his/her colleagues -- or even to the boss! In fact, sometimes peer coaches have the most context for the challenges their co-workers face and are, thus, in a unique position to provide perspective and guidance.
Want to improve your coaching skills? Start by listening more and talking less. Ask more and better questions, and especially be on the lookout for leading questions. You might consider using one of the feedback decks to help you with common scenarios, or to provide relevant practice when teaching others how to coach. |

 We are pleased to announce a new affiliation!
This fall, look for The Thiagi Group to rollout an online Coaching Program. We made a nice connection with this organization at the Training 2012 Conference and Expo (Go, Training Magazine!), and have written a series of custom scenarios and coaching scripts to be used in their soon-to-be-released program. We enjoyed the creative process with these talented professionals and are proud to be part of their efforts! |

Speaking of Coaching, we have both been working this year on a coaching certification program sponsored by a local university. It has been a privilege to meet and work with a truly outstanding group of committed professionals. We have been stretched and challenged in developing our own coaching skills, and have gained clarity about our niche in this field. Just another reminder that there's always room for growth and learning, no matter how experienced you are!
