Calle 13 speaks on Puerto Rican Political Prisoners'
with the President of Argentina (Interview in Spanish)

"Meanwhile, one of the most recents visits that Pérez (Rene-Residente) has made to the Presidents of Latin America, has been to the President of Argentina, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, to dialogue about the colonial status of Puerto Rico. Previously, the Puerto Rican singer had mailed her a letter, stating that his visit would be on behalf of all the Puerto Ricans who have struggled for the independence of Puerto Rico, on behalf of those that are still imprisoned for that, of those who have lost their lives as a result of this struggle and finally, on behalf of all those that continue this struggle." View the interview here.

PRCC and Clemente High School Partner on High School to College Pipeline

The PRCC and Clemente High School are partnering to identify and mentor 50 current seniors at Clemente High School as they enter the college application process. Three members of the Youth Leadership Institute will be assigned to perform the role of College Mentor. Each will contribute to the coordination of a Youth Development and College Mentoring program. Each will serve as facilitators and mentors for a the 50 Clemente High School students working to create opportunities to explore post-secondary options, enhance leadership development and contribute to community transformation.

The aim of the program will be to secure the successful acceptance and enrollment of all 50 students to either Northeastern Illinois University, University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) or Columbia College for the fall of 2013. Throughout the course of the year, the 50 students will be guided through the college application process, financial aid search process and exposed to a myriad of community initiatives in an effort to root them as long term change agents in addressing the needs of the community.

NBHRN Commemorates
El Grito de Lares in the Diaspora dedicated to Oscar López Rivera

Boston, MA
During the weekend of September 21 -23 Lourdes Lugo spoke at Villa Victoria. According to organizers and community members it had been 10 years since the last celebration of El Grito de Lares. The community that continues to struggle to keep itself, as it is completely surrounded by condos and town houses who's starting price is $450,000.00, once again came out to affirm its roots as it continue to fight to keep its identity and cultural relevance. There local musicians, singers, artist, elder and young gathered to share stories and listen to speakers present the historical accounts of El Grito de Lares. Lourdes Lugo brought September 23, 1868 to the present and the continued incarceration of Oscar Lopez Rivera. The audience was moved and over 40 signatures were gathered in support of his release. Community members had a fresh memory of the former political prisoners and understood the urgency to join the efforts to bring him home.

On Saturday September 22, 2012 Lourdes Lugo spoke at a more intimate community gathering in Fitchburg, Ma. There she explained the link of the El Grito de Lares and the on going fight to release her uncle Oscar Lopez Rivera. Just lie in Villa Victoria, the memory of the community held, and they also joined in the effort to Free Oscar Lopez Rivera by signing the petition, purchasing t-shirts and agreeing to collect more signature and join the efforts of his release. On behalf of National Boricua Human Rights we thank the efforts of the community organizers to re-ignite the historical memory, and help others remember that El Grito de Lares is Puerto Rico and Oscar Lopez Rivera belongs to us all.
