President Cohon Attends White House Meeting | |
Carnegie Mellon President Jared L. Cohon was invited to the White House Dec. 5 to attend a meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama and several other university presidents and chancellors to discuss making college more affordable for students.
President Cohon was invited because of CMU's expertise in developing online learning tools, including online classes that provide instructors with real-time information about each student's progress.

Holiday Concert Tops CFA Extravaganza, Dec. 9

The fourth annual Open Studio Day from noon to 10 p.m., Friday, Dec. 9, features performances and events that showcase student work and ongoing projects from the schools of Architecture, Art, Drama, Music, the STUDIO for Creative Inquiry and Miller Gallery.
The School of Music's annual free Holiday Concert will be at noon in the Rangos Ballroom, University Center. A second performance will take place at 8 p.m., Carnegie Music Hall. Tickets for the evening performance are $5 in advance, $7 at the door.

CMU Press Publishes Teen's Wartime Diary
| Seventy years ago this week, Pearl Harbor was attacked, forever changing the lives of many - including Japanese citizens living in America. This tempestuous time is now documented first-hand through the words of a young girl who found herself in a love triangle with two nations at war.
Published by Carnegie Mellon University Press, "Dear Gloria: Homesick for America in Wartime Japan" is the diary of Japanese teenager Toneko Kimura, written in the form of letters to her childhood best friend, Gloria Goodman. Kimura, then 13, started the diary after leaving the United States, where she had been living since she was 5 years old.

New Course Helps ID Tech-Based Products Thanks to Mechanical Engineering Professor Jonathan Cagan, a handful of creative student innovators are getting their moment in the sun.
In a new course, "Grand Challenge: Technology Identification and Product Design," mechanical engineering students are charged with identifying future technologies and products that could help solve some of the world's most daunting problems, from engineering better telemedicines to providing novel access to clean water.
