CMU To Name Building for Former President   

Carnegie Mellon will name the Collaborative Innovation Center (CIC) for its seventh president, Robert Mehrabian, during a ceremony at 11 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 7, in the building's atrium. The Robert Mehrabian Collaborative Innovation Center recognizes his contributions to economic development in Pittsburgh and to technology commercialization at CMU. He played a vital role in the Regional Economic Revitalization Initiative, which in the 1990s developed a plan for economic development in the greater Pittsburgh area. He also is credited for stimulating CMU's tech transfer operation.

Mehrabian, CMU's president from 1990-1997, is president and chief executive officer of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated.
 

 

CFA Hosts Holiday Extravaganza, Dec. 9

The fourth annual Open Studio Day from noon to 10 p.m., Friday, Dec. 9, features a variety of performances and events that showcase student work and ongoing projects from the schools of Architecture, Art, Drama, Music, the STUDIO for Creative Inquiry and Miller Gallery.

  

The School of Music's annual free Holiday Concert will be at noon in the Rangos Ballroom, UC. A second performance will take place at 8 p.m., Carnegie Music Hall. Tickets for the evening performance are $5 in advance, $7 at the door.

Gates and Hillman Centers Awarded LEED Gold       

The Gates and Hillman centers have earned LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for its green design, construction and operation. The centers join 10 other CMU buildings that have earned LEED certification for their environmental qualities.

To become LEED Gold certified, the buildings had to meet exacting standards for energy use, lighting, water and material use, as well as incorporate a variety of sustainable strategies.
 

Bus Tracking App Releases Android Version      

BrainCarnegie Mellon has released an Android version of Tiramisu, the smartphone application that enables transit riders in Allegheny County to share real-time information about bus schedules and seating.  Since the original version of the iPhone app was released last summer, riders have used Tiramisu to record10,000 trips on the Port Authority of Allegheny County transit system.

A new version is now available for download at the Android Market.

Qatar Students Deliberate Food Security 

Education City students recently spent an evening discussing the impact of climate change on Qatar's food security.

Organized by Carnegie Mellon Qatar with support from Qatar Foundation, Education City's first Campus Conversation event drew more than 100 students. CMU professors in philosophy and biological sciences teamed up with Student Affairs to offer the program.

Mentoring Program Applications Due Dec. 22   

Women interested in supporting other women at Carnegie Mellon can do so through the Barbara Smith Women's Mentoring Program.

Since 1994, the program has matched more than 300 women mentors with those who wish to be mentored. Mentor relationships center on professional interests and aspirations including, but not limited to, career advancement, educational opportunities and job-related issues.

United Way Campaign Continues Through Dec. 16  

Carnegie Mellon's 2011 United Way Campaign is under way and will continue through Dec. 16. Help make this year a success by going to  http://www.cmu.edu/hr/unitedway to donate.

As of Nov. 30, the university community has raised nearly $85,000 for United Way and the health and human service organizations United Way supports in our region.
