Cèilidh Weekend, Oct. 27-30, Combines Traditions

Student Affairs and University Advancement have joined forces to introduce Cèilidh (pronounced kay-lee) Weekend, Oct. 27-30. The new event combines Homecoming, Family Weekend and the International Festival.

 

"The common goal is to bring the entire community - students, families, alumni, faculty and staff - together in celebration," said Dan Barnett, director of on-campus programs for Alumni Relations.

QTEL CEO Leads Off Qatar Lecture Series  

A telecommunications executive recently told students to go after their passions.

 

Qtel Group CEO Nasser Marafih shared with students opportunities at his company and some of the critical skills they would need to succeed in business during the first "Making the Connections" lecture for the year at Carnegie Mellon in Qatar on Tuesday, Oct. 18.

CIT Students Support Local Food Bank 

Carnegie Mellon's Society of Automotive Engineering (SAE) Race Team will host "Racing Against Hunger" at noon on Friday, Oct. 21 at the Scaife Hall Garden.

 

The event, which features a racing demo of the new team car, will help to raise awareness of the need to combat malnutrition.

CS Adds New Course-Only Master's Program 

Carnegie Mellon's Computer Science Department has approved a new master of science degree for students who seek advanced coursework in computer science, which will begin in fall 2012.

 

 


Touchable Technology

Researchers from Carnegie Mellon, Disney Research, Pittsburgh and Microsoft Research presented their work, including a wearable projection system, an interactive projection system and touchscreen technology at this week's Association for Computing Machinery's Symposium on User Interface Software and Technology in Santa Barbara, Calif.

Two Researchers Awarded McCandless Chairs  

Carnegie Mellon has awarded the Anna Loomis McCandless Professorship to Amelia Haviland, associate professor in the Heinz College, and the Estella Loomis McCandless Professorship to Ann Lee, associate professor of statistics in the Marianna Brown Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
