Plant a Garden, Grow a Community

On Thursday March 1st, the Health and Wellness group members of the 40th class of Leadership Beaumont presented its project activity on community gardens, "Plant a Garden, Grow a Community." The mission of Leadership Beaumont is "To identify, cultivate and develop leaders who will serve and positively impact their community."

The Beaumont Community Gardens Program mission is to encourage, strengthen, and support community gardening efforts through the promotion of responsible environmental stewardship, social interaction among our community, and the development of educational gardens for all ages.

The event was held at Nutrition and Services for seniors on Concord, where over 50 participants received information on gardening from meteorology and gardening expert Greg Bostwick and registered dietician MaryEllen Vivrett. In addition, Ava Graves of McCabe Roberts United Methodist church presented information about her group's experiences with community gardening. Tying everything together with his own flare and fun was the night's MC, KAYD Program Director, Jay Bernard.

Participants were given a plethora of information on the effects on overall health and well being of growing your own food. Members of the group said they felt motivated to start a garden in their own community and were made more aware of the importance of healthy choices. Dinner was prepared and served by BISD students from the Taylor Career Center.

Downtown Beaumont On the Move

On Thursday, February 9, 2012, the Economic Development Committee of Leadership Plus, a program of Leadership Beaumont, based on the belief fifty-five and older individuals can offer a wealth of experience, leadership and vitality to their communities while enriching their own lives and offer opportunities for service, presented "Downtown Beaumont On the Move" at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas, located at 500 Main Street, Beaumont, Texas. With the assistance of guest speakers, Brenda Beadle, Capitol Project Manager for the City of Beaumont, and Carolyn Howard, Executive Director for Beaumont Main Street, those in attendance received valuable and exciting information relating to ongoing projects in which our community is presently involved, as well as those that are slated for future undertakings. The various projects will enhance and promote financial and cultural benefits not only for the residents of Beaumont, but for our Southeast Texas neighbors. Ms. Beadle and Ms. Howard strongly encouraged the attendees to take advantage of the many opportunities available to connect and become vitally involved in the future of our communities.
