The Advancing New Technologies at Lamar University Division led by Louis Wilson held their bi-annual Lamar Champions Breakfast on Tuesday morning. Industry leaders gathered to get updates from the university on research activities and programs. Dr. Jimmy Simmons provided welcoming remarks, followed by a review of the student cooperative education program with testimony from student engineers about their learning experiences. There was a virtual tour of the composite materials lab and discussion of Lamar's capabilities for composite research. They were also updated on the innovation and commercialization center. Special guests included representatives from ZEEP Inc. and BP Biofuels of North America, two new companies locating to our area. The breakfast was sponsored by Capital One Bank and Universal Coin & Bullion.
The Southeast Texas Economic Development Foundation had their quarterly meeting on Wednesday. Chaired by Charlie Foxworth, the group adopted their annual budget., affirmed the approval of a new small business loan, reviewed the portfolio of existing loans, and discussed future projects including plans for Business Development Week scheduled for April 24-28, 2012.
The 108th annual meeting was held on Thursday with a VIP reception at the Beaumont Civic Center, the exchange of leadership from Nathan Cross to Robert Turner, and the presentation of the Spindletop Award to AT&T. A great evening of entertainment followed with Michael Grimm and the Little River Band. Thank you to all the sponsors who made the evening a success.

Leadership Plus, a program for individuals 55 and older, is seeking applicants to participate in its first class year. The opening session will be Wednesday, January 4, 2011 with other sessions on February 9, March 8, April 19, and graduation will be May 3.
Leadership Plus is a structured and dynamic program for like-minded individuals interested in putting their talents to work for the greater good of the community. There will be opportunities to develop new friendships, become more knowledgeable of community needs and services, become updated on area economic development and participate in interesting community projects.
