Principal's Notes

I'm so looking forward to our annual Read Night and Chili Supper tonight.  I hope you all can make it.  We'll be serving Bibi's delicious chili and cinnamon rolls from 5:00 to 7:30.  We'll also have books out for you to read together and computers available for SRC quizzes.  The Title I teachers are setting up a family game room, and we'll also have a Book Swap for both parents and kids.

Due to the high number of snow days this year, the Kansas State Department of Education has extended the window for state assessments to May 2nd.  We have decided to take advantage of the extra instructional days, and have modified our test schedule at Pray-Woodman accordingly.  Please mark your calendars:

  • 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade reading - April 4-8
  • 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade math - April 18-22
  • 4th grade science - April 25-29

Tonight we will kick off our spring PTO fundraiser, which is a Penny War.  Students may bring their spare change to donate to the cause.  We'll have several donation bottles to choose from, each with pictures of different staff members on them.  The staff member who "collects" the most money will get pies in the face at an all-school assembly on April 1st.  The participating staff members include:

  • Myself and Mr. Dome
  • Mrs. Buresh and Dr. Wells (counselors)
  • Mr. Buchanan and Mrs. Emery (PE/Music)
  • Mrs. Young and Mrs. Miller (paras)
  • Mrs. Dieker, Mrs. White, and Mrs. McArthur (secretaries)

Thanks for your support!

Library News...by Sheryl Connell

"Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night keeps Pray-Woodman Readers from the Book Fair!!"

Thank you, once again, Pray Woodman parents and students for being such staunch supporters of the Library Media Center's Book Fair.  In addition to encouraging your children to read, your purchases help buy books and SRC prizes for the library media center.  We received approximately $3,000 in Scholastic books and $1100 in cash from our February book fair.

Our NEA sponsored "Read Across Kansas" contest is drawing to a close.  It seems to be turning into Read Across America again as we've made it all the way across the state of Kansas and are starting into Missouri with our SRC points.  Third grade has been leading the pack for the past two weeks, though second grade seems to be slowly gaining ground.  We'll find out who the winner will be on Dr. Seuss's birthday, March 2nd.  The grade level with the most SRC points on March 2nd will have a pre-Spring Break Party the last hour and a half of the day on March March 17.

We look forward to seeing you all in the library for Read Night this week!

Counselor's Corner...by Dr. B.J. Wells and Joey Buresh

Fourth and Fifth grade parents will have an opportunity to preview the Human Growth and Development videos before their children see them with their classes.  The parent preview is scheduled for Tuesday, April 5th at Pray-Woodman Elementary School.  The fourth grade videos will be shown at 6:00 and the fifth grade videos will be shown at 7:00 p.m.  Parents may bring their 4th or 5th grade student with them to preview the videos if they wish.

The girls will watch the Human Growth and Development video with counselor, B.J. Wells, and/or nurse, Darlene McCulley.  The boys will see Meet the New You for Boys with Coach Buchanan or Coach Schauer.  This will take place during their scheduled physical education time.

The video covering AIDS will be viewed during their physical education class with boys and girls together.  If you prefer that your child NOT see these videos, you will need to sign the opt-out form that will be distributed to your child in April.  If you have questions, please feel free to contact the 4th or 5th grade counselor, B.J. Wells at 721-0902.

Classroom Counseling Lessons

In February classroom lessons,  second grade students listened to Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse and discussed the importance of honesty and self control.  Third grade students learned how to be a S-M-A-R-T Cookie and learned test taking skills.  They also learned what causes stress, how to recognize stress, and practiced "stress busters".  Fourth graders focused in on anger management, resolving conflicts and stress management, while fifth graders reviewed taunting, teasing, and harassment.
