Principal's Notes
Dear Parents,
I'm always surprised at how fast the school year goes by, and this year is no exception. It's hard to believe we're already planning our spring parent-teacher conferences and making preparations for state assessments. Please mark your calendars for the weeks of March 7th through 11th and April 4th through 8th. We are planning to administer the state assessments for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders during those weeks.
It was great seeing so many parents at Donuts with Dad on January 20th and 21st. We had a great turn-out!
PTO is organizing meals for the staff during parent-teacher conferences. The theme is "comfort food" and we are still in need of some casseroles and desserts. Please contact Tanja Weir at weappreciatepws@yahoo.com if you would like to provide something on February 2nd or 3rd.
Other PTO news: Nominations are being taken at the February 22nd PTO meeting for Parent Board Representatives for the 2011-12 school year. Please call me at 721-0902 if you are interested. I'd love to get some new parents involved.
Also, I'd like to invite you to attend a building-level PTO meeting on Thursday, February 17th, at 6:00 pm in the PWS teacher's lounge. The purpose of the meeting is to start planning a spring fund-raiser. Last year we had a Penny War (boys v. girls), but we are open to new suggestions.
I hope to see you next week at parent-teacher conferences!

| Maize Elementary Pre-Kindergarten Connection |
Each spring we provide the opportunity for next year's Maize School District kindergarteners to visit the school. The visits are an hour in length once a month for four months. Our goal is to acclimate the child and parent to the staff, routine and buildings. If you would like to enroll your child, or to get more information, please call the Maize Elementary office at 722-8230 as soon as possible.

| Important Calendar Change |
|
Last Day of School Moves Up One Day to May 25
This year's last day of school will be Wednesday, May 25. An administrative error was made when the calendar was created. Consequently, the last day of school is May 25 and not May 26 as originally published. |
In the event of school being dismissed because of inclement weather, a phone notification will be sent to the primary residence phone number. Calls will start going out as early as 5:30 a.m. on the day of the closure. If a decision is made the night before to call off school, calls will go out until 10:30 p.m.
Families and staff may consult other sources of information to determine if schools will be closed. The district's Web site, www.usd266.com , will be updated as soon as the decision is made to call off school and local media will be contacted in traditional methods.

News from the Nurse...by Darlene McCulley |
Is it a cold or Influenza?
When to keep your child home
Students need to have good attendance for them to learn along with their peers. Practicing good handwashing and getting their vaccinations helps children keep healthy for school. Children get about 6-8 colds per year. Attending school with the sniffles is ok. Students with fevers, vomiting, diarrhea or a disruptive cough should stay home. Non-stop coughing spreads germs. Teach your child to cover his mouth with his inner elbow instead of his hand. Coughing into the hand spreads germs to all surfaces touched afterwards. Symptoms of a cold include possible low grade fever, sore throat, stuffy, runny nose, hacking cough, and lasts for about 2 - 5 days. Complications include sinus congestion, ear infection and asthma-like symptoms. There is no treatment for the cold. Prevention is key. Wash hands and use hand sanitizer often especially before eating. Teach your kids how to wash their hands properly making lots of bubbles with the soap while they sing a short song like the ABC's. Also instruct them to keep their hands away from their face and out of their mouth. Let them know that the germs that make us sick enter our bodies through our mouths and nose. Symptoms of Influenza (seasonal flu) include fever over 100 degrees, headache, general aches and pains, fatigue and weakness, chest discomfort, and can last 5-10 days. Treatment with antiviral medication can sometimes be used if started within the first day or two of the illness, but is expensive. Complications of seasonal flu include bronchitis, pneumonia, bacterial infections. For more information about the flu, click here. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Vaccination and handwashing are very important in preventing the spread of communicable diseases. If parents work, have a back up plan for your children when they are sick. The Center for Disease Control recommends that people who are sick with flu-like symptoms should stay home for at least 24 hours after the fever is gone. Fever should be gone without the use of a fever reducing medication. Help send the message to your children that school is important, but keep them home for fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and continuous coughing. |
| Counselor's Corner...by Dr. B.J. Wells and Joey Buresh |
Barbara Colloroso, author of The Bully, the Bullied, and the Bystander recently shared how to help your child not become a bully. Here are her steps from Page 195:
1. (If your child bullies someone) intervene immediately with discipline. 2. Create opportunities to "do good." 3. Nurture empathy. 4. Teach friendship skills-assertive, respectful, and peaceful ways to relate to others. 5. Closely monitor your child's movie and TV viewing, video game playing, computer activities and music to eliminate exposure to violence. 6. Engage in more constructive, entertaining, and energizing activities. 7. Teach your child to "will good."
The counselors continue to have friendship groups available for your students. New groups will be forming soon. The fourth grade girls group called Sisters Forever to help stop relational aggression, just had their graduation with 28 out of 99 fourth grade girls participating.
Fourth and fifth grade parents please make sure you place the Human Growth and Development Film preview night on your calendar for April 5th .

| IMPORTANT ATTENDANCE REMINDER |
|
If your student is absent, it is very important for you to call in and excuse them by 9:00 a.m. Excused absences must be confirmed by a parent, and must be for reasons of illness, medical appointment, funeral or a family activity with the parents. The school reserves the right to determine whether an absence is excused or unexcused.
If a parent has not contacted the school within three days of the absence, the unverified absence will become a permanent unexcused absence. We are required by Kansas statute to report unexcused absences to the Department of Social and Rehabilitative Services when they total 3 consecutive days, 5 days in a semester or 7 days in a school year. |
