Wine Tasting

Greetings!

Summer is in full swing here on the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail and a whole lot of fun awaits you. Summer events like All Inked Up, Jammin with the Animals and my personal favorite the Chocoholics Celebration. For the music lover you can attend concerts from Thursday through Sunday at either a winery or Taughannock Park. Other ways to entice you to visit are the wine specialty dinners, the farmer's markets, artists creations and on a hot day those refreshing  wine slushies. Especially visit us from July 27 through August 12 for the Cayuga Lake Wineathlon in order to collect all 16 winery buttons.

There is something for everyone on the trail and we hope to see you having the time of your life. Share photos and comments on facebook and twitter. We love to hear from you.

Boat Accessible Wineries

A few weekends ago I had a very remarkable opportunity here in Finger Lakes Wine Water to Wine boatCountry and one I hope that you too can experience. I was able to join a group on the Water to Wine Boat Tours that runs on Cayuga Lake. It was a beautiful sunny day with a perfect breeze, blue skies dotted with a few white fluffy clouds, picturesque.

I met some great people on the boat who were all set to enjoy the sun, lake and wine. Two ladies were from Pittsburgh and were on the boat because their husband and fiance were fishing in the Cayuga Lake Bass Tournament. As Loretta Berger says, "Simply fantastic! A novice wine drinkers answer to exploring the vineyards at Cayuga Lake." Her friend Kristen Laney mirrored her response by saying, "The Water to Wine winery tour was the perfect way to experience Cayuga Lake and its vineyards. Winery hopping by boat can't be beat. We'll be back to the Finger Lakes for sure".

As we headed towards our first winery, Sheldrake Point we were able to dock and walk upShel glass to the winery to taste our first set of wines. We were able to try 5 different wines from either one of their flights and of course I fell in love with their new oaked Waterfalls Chardonnay.  A bottle of their floral Gewrztraminer and Cabernet Franc also went home with me.

LP BarrelsAfter the Sheldrake visit we were off on the boat for a trip across the lake to Long Point State Park for our picnic lunch. I had never been to that park before, quite lovely with remarkable views. Our next winery stop was

Long Point Winery.Since there were so many of us, fourteen all together; they picked us up in three cars for a caravan. Russ, one of the tasters at the winery, drove us and gave us our tasting, a choice of five of either a white or red wine, my favorite, their Cabernet Sauvignon.

Back on the boat we then crossed the lake again and headed to Thirsty Owl. As we pulledTO up we had to wait at the dock that was full with other boaters. They pick you up in their jeep to take you on a ride that felt like you were headed off for a safari around the vineyards, a hilarious venture. We proceeded upstairs for a private tasting and their Meritage was a hit.

There are six wineries all together that offer boat accessibility. The other three are Buttonwood Grove Winery, Knapp Winery and Goose Watch Winery. If you can't just walk to the winery, give them a call when you arrive and they will pick you up. Other water boat tours are available on Cayuga Lake, for listings check out our

Tours & Transportation listing, on our website, under What's Along The Trail.
