Inspiring Peace in our Community

2012 Peace Week logo

Do you know an ordinary person or group in our community who demonstrates a vision and an extraordinary commitment to making our world more peaceful and just? These people are models for our community. Peace is their main focus, and they invest incredible energy in bringing it to life. These people are peacemakers and they inspire us.

Community peacemakers think peace, they do it and they inspire peace in those around them. If you know someone like this, recognize their selfless efforts by nominating them for a YMCA Peace Medallion by September 24. Visit YMCA Peace Week to nominate your peacemaker.

Keeping your Kids Healthy this Fall

According to the 2012 Report Card from Active Healthy Kids Canada, 46% of Canadian kids get three hours or less of active play per week. But there are some simple ways you can make fitness a priority on your weekly "to do list". How about enlisting your kids to help with yard clean-up or taking a family walk?

Healthy Lunch Ideas
  • Dips are always popular. Pack hummus or vegetable dip with some veggies, mini pita bread, or whole wheat crackers.
  • Pack yogurt with some cut fruit in a separate containers so kids can have fun dipping it or adding it to the yogurt.
  • Use darker green lettuce or spinach in sandwiches or wraps because it has more nutrients.
  • Wholewheat wraps! Try cream cheese, leftover chicken or ham, cucumbers and cheese.
Get your kids involved too! Dedicate time each night to get them involved and offer them options to choose from. By asking them what they want, they actually may want to eat it!
Save the Date!
YMCA World Challenge

Join us on Saturday October 13 for the YMCA World Challenge: 2012 Hoop Springs Eternal

This exciting, new YMCA initiative will share our  YMCA story by mobilizing 5 million people on the same day across the globe. But most important, it will be a day to show everyone how we are working to empower young people to transform their communities using culture, sports, education, exchange programs, spiritual development and more.

Why Basketball?

Did you know that Basketball is a YMCA invention dating back to 1812.

Special Sneak Peek: The Raptors 40' locker room replica will be here for you to tour and we'll host a Raptors Learn to Dribble clinic. Stay tuned for more details!

YMCA Youth Leaders

They advocate for special needs children, engage youth in volunteerism, tutor students to be successful within their academics and are dedicated to serving global communities.

In August, four of our outstanding YMCA youth leaders, Matthew Ellies, Natasha Ng, Jonny De Oliveira and Michelle Ng, were awarded the Peter Gilgan Leadership Award for their outstanding contributions to the YMCA and the Oakville community.

Each youth leader received financial support up to $2,500 to assist them in their studies and help them to continue to make an impact in our community. Visit Peter Gilgan Leadership Award to read more about the award recipients and their contributions.

September is National Arthritis Awareness Month

Did you know?

There are more than 100 different conditions related to Arthritis.

Prevention Tip:

Good nutrition and regular exercise are vital in managing arthritis. You are actually "feeding" your joints when you're active, and the cartilage (which protects the bones) depends on the movement of joints to absorb nutrients -- and relieve pain.

To find out more about arthritis, visit the Arthritis Society.
