A Gift of School Supplies for Oakside Second Graders
This January, every second grader at Peekskill's Oakside Elementary School received a treat to brighten the new year. Over many months this past winter, a group of retired teachers, members of the New York State Union of Teachers (NYSUT), assembled rainbow-colored boxes, each loaded with school supplies. They arrived at the school in time to give every student a fresh start to schoolwork in 2012. |

Coming Up: February Celebrates Black History Month
Black History Month will get off to a musical start at Peekskill Middle School when world-renowned jazz musician and Peekskill High School alumnus Ray Blue and his musicians present three afternoon workshops on the History of Jazz in the PKMS Auditorium.
February 2, 2012 - African Roots, Spiritual and Blues (4:30 PM)
February 9, 2012 - Blues, Swing, Rhythm and Blues (5:00 PM)
February 14, 2012 - BeBop, Modal and Modern (5:00 PM)
The D'Joule' African Dance Company will visit and perform with PKMS LEAP students on February 29 to culminate a month of celebration. Contact Naima Smith Moore at PKMS for additional information.
During February also, Peekskill Middle School students will be cooking recipes from The Black Family Reunion Cookbook in their Family and Consumer Science Classes. The book contains memoir as well as recipes and is compiled by the National Council of Negro Women. "Strong families and good cooking often go hand in hand," is one of the book's messages. Another book that Middle School eighth grade students will explore is Peekskill's African-American History by Peekskill historian John Curran. This work contains many local stories of Peekskill families past and present. All the Peekskill schools will be celebrating Black History month; watch for the February issue of this eNewsletter for complete news of activities and explorations from all grades. |

Financial Aid Workshops at PHS
Despite the recession, Peekskill High School seniors still have their eyes on college, and many have already been accepted. According to the Assistant Principal for Guidance, Margie Daniels, "We are talking to many eager parents. College is still a critical part of the American dream, and we try to foster a college-going culture. And there are many options available." The Peekskill High School Guidance counselors-Jim Bennett, Virginia Bovian, Frank Colombini, Zorayda Saldana, and staff member Maria Gordineer-work with seniors and their families to identify college options and, most critically, to help with the financial planning required. With about 185 graduating seniors this year, Ms. Daniels says a high percentage are interested in college. This January, the counseling staff sponsored an information forum and a hands-on event, bringing families to the Peekskill High School library computers to begin the process of completing an online FAFSA, or application for Federal financial aid. "The FAFSA is challenging, but definitely important to complete," explained Jim Bennett. "And then we help students apply for the many scholarships available." Ms. Daniels emphasized that she and her staff are there to help any senior who wants to pursue higher education; "We are a caring community and we're here to help." |
