Opera at Peekskill High School An acclaimed opera that tells the dramatic story of this fugitive slave woman and her family was performed at Peekskill High School on Friday, January 6, 2012. The opera, "Flight to Freedom: The Story of Margaret Garner," was composed in 2005 by Grammy Award-winning composer Richard Danielpour and Nobel Laureate novelist and librettist Toni Morrison. A special abridged version of the opera has been created for performance in schools by Copland House Artistic and Executive Director Michael Boriskin. Special guest Don Bennett, Councilman, City of Peekskill was the narrator. The performers, top young opera singers, also visited U.S. history classes to discuss the effects of the Fugitive Slave Laws depicted in the opera.
Copland House, located in nearby Cortlandt Manor, is the former home of renowned composer Aaron Copland. |

A Gift of Shoes
Thanks to Peekskill High School graduate and NBA star player Elton Brand, the Peekskill High School Girls and Boys basketball teams have brand new Nike shoes to play in. This is the 10th year that Elton Brand has made this generous gesture to the students who would like to follow in his footsteps. Through his Elton Brand Foundation, the PHS alumnus has always helped support young people in Peekskill, including funding the Elton Brand Academy, an after-school tutoring program, and scholarships awarded to Peekskill High School graduates. "The shoes mean a lot to us," commented senior Bayron Carter. "They mean someone believes in us." Shown in the heading above are some of the members of the Lady Red Devils, and directly above are some of the players on the boys Red Devil basketball team, together with Edward Peterson and Gary Male, who coordinated the shoe donation. (The Peekskill Boys Team now has a 6-1 record!) |
