Student Reading Achievements Shared with Superintendent, Board of Education
At a special school board meeting, students from Peekskill's three elementary schools as well as the middle school were honored for their summer reading accomplishments and asked to share with the Board of Education their reflections on a book. Back at each school, all summer readers received recognition and certificates. Superintendent Judith Johnson, praising the young readers, reflected: "When I was a girl, the library was my window to other worlds; I read and read, all summer long. Books provide us with ways to answer the questions we all have about family, love, friendship, and success. I congratulate all these students who worked hard and whose reading lives are just beginning."

Peekskill High School Students Visit Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art
Peekskill High School Art Teacher Heather Brown and her students have been learning about 20th century history and art as they visit Peekskill's own Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art (HVCCA), which is featuring an evolving exhibit of Eastern European art called "After the Fall." HVCCA Co-founder Livia Straus has servedas a guide for the students, explaining events in post-World War II Europe and helping the students grasp how artists have responded to the events of the Cold War and the period since. HVCCA also hosts visiting artists from Eastern Europe who create art that is added to the exhibit. In the photo, Ms. Straus prepares to introduce students to a portrait of Field Marshal Tito by Romanian artist Zsoldt Bodoni. "We are so fortunate to have a world class resource like this just around the corner," reflects Ms. Brown.

Peekskill Teacher Earns National Board Certification
Anna Del Monaco, a reading teacher

at Woodside Elementary Sch o ol i n the Peekskill City School District, has earned the distinction of National Board Certification. This credential, awarded by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, is an advanced teaching credential that complements a state teacher license. It is valid for 10 years.
National Board Certification is achieved upon successful completion of a voluntary assessment program designed to recognize effective and accomplished teachers who meet high standards based on what teachers should know and be able to do. To earn her Certification, Ms. Del Monaco had to complete four in-depth portfolio entries for judging, including two extensive video recordings of her teaching. She also had to take an exam, given in White Plains. The entire process took two years.
Ms. Del Monaco has been a teacher in Peekskill since 1998. She grew up in Sleepy Hollow, obtained a B.S. degree in Elementary Education from Pace University, and her master's degree from Teachers College Columbia University.
"I'm always interested in improving myself as a teacher and as a person. I feel like I am always learning and never know enough," Ms. Del Monaco reflects. "National Board Certification was an ideal way to grow as a teacher, despite the challenges of completing the assignment. The most interesting part of the process was watching, analyzing, and assessing my videotaped lessons. The most difficult part was time management,
because it is a serious commitment."
Commenting on her accomplishments, Woodside principal Stephen Ochser observes: "For Ms. Del Monaco, it is ALL about her students, and this award truly highlights her high level of professionalism. Congratulations to Anna for her very special achievement." Ms. Del Monaco will be recognized at an upcoming meeting of the Board of Education and, meanwhile, enjoys the progress her students make every day. |
