AP Scholars at Peekskill High School
Seniors honored by College Board

2010 AP Scholars at PHS
The College Board has named eleven students as AP Scholars for the  2009-2010 school year. Eight students graduated. Three are seniors this year at Peekskill High School and are pictured at left:  Derek Johnson, Jose Lebron, and Jimmy Ruano.

The College Board's Advanced Placement Program (AP) provides students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school and to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams.  About 18 percent of the more than 1. 8 million students worldwide who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to also earn an AP Scholar Award. The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement. At Peekskill High School, Alexander Velez-Green qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.  Jose Lebron qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.  Jessica Curtin, Destiny Demelo, Jason Dick, Christian Garrido, Brianne Kane, Juliana Terjesen, Joseph Vele, Derek Johnson, and Jimmy Ruano qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Exams with scores of 3 or higher.
Pool and Team Make Strong Showing

Swim teamThis fall, the girls' swim team and Coach Steve MacKay have had the honor of inaugurating competition in the new pool at the Peekskill Middle School. The swimmers have gotten off to a great start this season. Their record so far is two wins and two very close losses. "I'm very proud of all the new swimmers we have who are coming out for the team," said MacKay, who swam himself for Peekskill High School some years ago. "I invite everyone to come watch a meet and cheer on our team."
Well-Planned Start for Schools

Oakside studnets at workAs the 2010-2011 school year got underway in Peekskill's five schools, every administrator, teacher, and staff member was involved in planning for both institutional and personal professional development to benefit Peekskill's schoolchildren.

At meetings during the summer, each building principal developed strategic goals. Combined with responses to the District's test scores and higher New York State standards, the goals are incorporated into Continuous Improvement Plans, or CIPs, for each school. The goals address the five District goal categories: 1) Foster an environment that provides all students with access to a challenging and rigorous instructional program based on 21st Century learning standards, and that significantly reduces the achievement gap; 2) Ensure all teachers have opportunities to continuously grow as instructional experts; 3) Create opportunities for parents and neighbors to engage with the schools; 4) Ensure, as part of the Caring Communities Initiative, that students and adults work in safe, secure, and nurturing environments; and 5) Ensure alignment between educational goals and fiscal resources.  The complete goals, together with accountability measures and assessment measures, are available on the Peekskill District Web site.

 Gifts from St. Peter's Church
School supplies donated

Gifts from St. Peter's
Parishioners of St. Peter's Church on North Division Street collected school supplies to help students in need. Mrs. Holder and Mrs. Wolf brought the backpacks, paper, pens, pencils, and more to Peekskill High School, where they were gratefully received by Principal Sherrill Murray-Lazarus. "These gifts show tremendous thoughtfulness on the part of our good neighbor, St. Peter's," reflected Ms. Lazarus. "Our students are very appreciative."

Back-to-School Ideas for ParentsAther and daughter find Middle School Classrooms
As a parent, you are your child's first teacher. You can help your children be successful in school. Here are some ideas.

* Read to your children as much as you can
* Read from a variety of materials: the newspaper, magazines, picture books
* Read yourself, so your children see you read
* Limit "screen time" in front of the TV, video game, and computer
* Make sure your child does some homework every night
* Make sure your child gets a good night's sleep
* Attend your child's parent-teacher conference.

The school is your partner in helping your child succeed.

The best way to predict your future
is to create it.
