the Word from the Herd it's cold outside
Remember the movie Christmas Story? A boy, on a dare, licks a metal pole on a cold winter day & his tongue sticks to it. Well, it won't be that dramatic if you put a cold bit in my mouth, but it's still nice to warm it up a little...just enough, please, to take the chill off. Hold it in your hands for a few minutes or put it under your jacket. You could even warm it up by holding it in your mouth for a few minutes. That's a problem?! Ok, never mind that last one. Thanks, Kris!

Did you know?

Horses can feel a fly land on their skin. Think about that next time your horse is trying to convince you he can't feel your legs. |
| Wildlife Watch

Northern Cardinal
Our state bird may be one of the most easily identifiable. They keep their color all year round & don't migrate. The females aren't as eye-catching as the bright red males but they are beautiful in their own right. If you see one, look around for the other - they are usually found in pairs.
If you want to see them close up, put out some black oil sunflower seed. After awhile you will look out your window some snowy morning & see 6 or 7 pairs of cardinals waiting patiently for you to put your boots on & deliver their seed.

Dear Friends of MacNair's,
I know all of you want to join the staff in wishing Laura P a speedy & uneventful recovery from shoulder surgery. Take the time to heal, Laura, but hurry back! We miss you! I know I reminded you last month, but check our Facebook page or website for updates if the weather turns iffy. Congratulations to our own Anne C & Connie C for taking first place in the Hilltoppers division of the Hunter Pace. Everybody had so much fun & what a beautiful day! Year-End Awards were given out at both the Triangle Jumper Series & the NCDCTA shows, both concluding for the year here at MacNair's. November was certainly a busy show month! See below for more details. As most of you are aware, there are big changes afoot at MacNair's. The school horses will be moving to Country Acres on 12/11, & lessons will now take place there. The school barn will now be known as the Annex. We have new rings & new lights at Country Acres to accommodate everyone, & the Main Office will be located across the parking lot from the covered ring. Let us know if you have any questions & we hope all our lesson students enjoy being at Country Acres!Nancy

Getting to know us
this month... Karen When you're not around horses what do you like to do? Yoga, hiking, movies, dogs & cooking. Pets? Bella (Bassett), Puffy (Chow mix), Rosie (Pure Mutt), & Barney (a sweet goofy foster dog.) What's the last thing you accomplished with a horse that you were really proud of? Taught my horses to wait for permission to eat. When teaching lessons, what do find yourself repeating? "Stretch up! Breathe!" Favorite movie/TV show? Loved the movie "Buck" - not just for horse people! On TV, the Mentalist, Cash Cab Favorite snack? popcorn, gingersnaps & chocolate Horse books you like? War Horse - read it before you see the movie if you can! Also, Soul of a Horse by Joe Camp. What do you think is important for your students to know? They should try to feel what's happening both in themselves & in their horses. If you couldn't work with horses what would be your dream job? I guess training dogs, but can't I have both?

the Riding School
 | Part of the winning Stroller Team
|
It's SHOWTIME, Riding School riders! Twice a year you get a chance to compete with other riders at your level, whether child or adult. It's fun! Details about the show: Riding School Show
12/23 to 31 there will be no group classes. The horses are taking the Polar Express to the North Pole to help out the reindeer. Private lessons & lease rides will take place.
The Hunter Pace was really fun, wasn't it? The Strollers division was dominated by teams of our riders: Karen, Thomas, Emily, Marianna & Taylor S won! And the team of Mattie, Kelly, Noah & Taylor E came in second. And thanks for the Hunter Pace help: Barry, MaryAnne & the 4-H concessionaires!
For weather-related updates, check the website's Latest News.
On 12/11 the school horses will be moving to Country Acres. After that date, lessons will take place there & the school barn will be known as the Annex & will just be for adult boarders. There are new rings & lights at Country Acres as mentioned above. We will keep you informed regarding any tweaks that may be made to your lesson schedule. Not to worry - your favorite horses & instructors will remain the same. We think you will all enjoy having your lessons at Country Acres!

A Couple Reminders... for December
Open letter to Santa: Please bring all our nice riders warm clothes to wear during lessons in the winter. Think: thinsulate gloves, Santa. Also silk long johns. On second thought, bring warm clothes for the naughty ones, too.
Lunging: is not allowed in a ring where a lesson is taking place. Please help us keep everyone safe.
Body Clipping: Before your horse gets body clipped make sure s/he gets a soap bath & a good rinsing. The cleaner the horse, the better the body clip will look. Also please make sure you have your horse's winter wardrobe ready. Don't say "Now where did I put that blanket?" while your shivering horse is looking over your shoulder, also wondering. Celena: 919-818-8921
More Dena Words of Blanketing Wisdom: Mark your blankets! All of them! Legibly! Sharpies aren't hard to come by!
And if you haven't yet filled out a blanket card or need to make changes, extra cards are on Dena's desk. Don't forget to note on the card when your horse gets body clipped.
Recycle: Still (& always) looking for donations of old towels of any size. Doesn't matter how raggedy - we won't judge you. Drop them in the lounge or office at Country Acres. Thanks!
Photos: If you see a photo you like, you are welcome to download it to print. The ones on the Shutterfly site are higher resolution so if you see one on Facebook you want to print, go our photosite & get it from there.
