the Word from the Herd Some reminders...
When you arrive at the barn for your lesson, check to see who you're riding. I hope it's me!
Go get all my tack & put it outside my door. Check my groom bucket to make sure everything you need is there.
Have your equipment right there, too: helmet, gloves, crop, water bottle, etc.
Now, you can go get a halter for me. If an instructor is there, you can come in my stall - try not to startle me & make sure I see you before you approach. Give my shoulder a scratch & let me snuffle you. After we've said hello, you can put me on cross-ties & start grooming.
Pick my feet first so if I'm missing a shoe you'll know right away. My body language will tell you whether you are grooming me too hard, too soft or just right. Don't forget to use the soft brush on my head.
Also, tighten my girth by increments - not all at once! - & put your helmet on before you bridle me.
Ready? Let's go ride!

Did you know?

Horses' teeth continue to grow throughout their lives. They need to, as the nearly constant chewing grinds them down. However, sometimes they wear unevenly or develop sharp edges. The horse dentist then files them down so they're smooth again.

Get well soon!

Everyone at MacNair's Country Acres wishes Lily a speedy & uneventful recovery.

Hunting Season
Hunting season in Wake County usually begins in mid-Sept. If you are trail riding, please wear something in blaze orange, ride with someone else & speak loudly or sing to alert people to your presence.
Remember, blaze orange is the color this fall. If you don't already have a fashionable blaze orange garment, see if you can borrow Laura's 4-H polo wraps.

Dear Friends of MacNair's,
MacNair's Country Acres would like to welcome Lauren Wiggins & her horse Remington as well as Catie McVey & her horse Capitan! As some of you've heard, Julie will only be here part-time after 9/3 but will still be instructing & doing various clinics. Those of you lucky enough to be Julie's students & those of us lucky enugh to be her co-workers will miss her tremendously & wish her all the best in her new endeavor.
Riding School classes began 8/26. Welcome back everyone! Please let us know if you (or a friend) still need registration forms. If you can ride before 2:30 on a weekday, check with the office - those lessons are discounted. NCSU IHSA Hunt Seat Team try-outs were held here on 8/24. Congratulations to all who made the team! For the rest of you who thought that riding was really fun, please check with the Main Office to get details about lessons. 919-851-1118In the interest of saving trees (& postage) please remember that all invoices will be emailed this year. If you need a paper copy you will need to let Nancy know. We will be holding a Video Clinic on 9/10, the day before our NCDCTA Show on 9/11. Please register early, the last one was very popular. Overnight stabling is available. Our first Hunter Pace will be 9/25. entry formWe have added some new activities this year & have set some dates for those that proved popular last year. We hope you find one or more that interests you. Let us know if you want to do something not included - chances are someone else is thinking about the same thing. For boarders, we are offering a new service for those of you who would like your horse ridden while you're out of town. An Exercise Ride at $30/ride will keep your horse ridden and happy till you return. Please see Thom for details. Nancy

the Riding School Welcome! We're glad you're here!
For those of you new to the Riding School (or if you want to re-fresh your memory) we have put together some Riding School FAQ's.
There will be no lessons on school horses 9/3, 4 & 5 (Labor Day). The horses will get a little R & R.
Here are a few reminders specific to the Riding School.
Only staff is allowed to drive past the fence-line next to the Main Office. Past that point you are entering the Realm of the Unexpected (also known as children, ponies, horses, cats, dogs & instructors who are wondering why you aren't parked in the parking lot.)
If you can get to the barn on a weekday before 2:30, lessons will be discounted by $5. We are putting together groups for children & adults; check with the Main Office.
An instructor must be present for you to enter a horse's stall. Students must cross-tie horses before grooming, tacking or anything else.
The school horses are not allowed to jump & will do flat work only from 8/26 till 9/9. This will assure that everybody (human & equine) is in suitable shape to take on the physical exertion of jumping. Three of those days they will be on vacation anyway (see above.)
