Cloverbud Club Activities
Cloverbud Club: This
program is designed for currently enrolled Pony School riders 6 to 9 years old.
A "pre - 4-H" program, Cloverbuds meets once a month for an un-mounted
session with an emphasis on horse care, handling and theory. Each
meeting is structured as a meeting/mini-clin ic and gives students additional
learning opportunities and hands-on experience with horses and related
activities.
September 25 - Parts of the horse - Parts of the saddle, bridle and cleaning of the tack
Learn about the different parts of the horse, their names and where they are located on the horse by using a horse puzzle. Then we will test your classroom knowledge on a real pony.
Every good rider needs to know what equipment they need, what it is called and how to take care of it. This will be a hands-on experience with the care and cleaning of the tack.
October 23 - Colors, markings and breeds of horses - Feeding and general care of the horse
What color is this horse? What is the difference between a bay and a chestnut? How many different breeds of horses do we have at barn? We will learn what is special about the horse's colors and how the colors change with different breeds.
What does your horse eat? This will be hands-on experience learning about what it takes to feed a horse. Participants will learn about different types of feed and will get to feed the horses their afternoon meal.
November 13 - Gaits of the horse: Speed and footfalls
How does the horse moves its legs at the walk, trot and canter? This clinic will show the horse moving at each gait by using colored wraps on the horse's legs. We will diagram the footfalls and learn about each gait's different speeds.
December 11 - Own a pony for the day
This is the culmination of what we've learned in the previous months. Clinic participants will groom, tack and feed their horse for the day. Certificates will be issued to everyone to show the many hours of basic horse care they've achieved in the preceding months. We'll also have a crafty surprise.
