A client asked me last week: "why should I use social media?" and I was reminded about a similar question asked not too long ago: "Why should I email you when I can just stick it in an envelope and put a stamp on?" This may seem odd now but I remember when most people were appalled by the idea of using email instead of traditional mailing and saw it as troublesome and insecure. And it isn't too long ago since businesses were asking "why do I need a website?" -- answer honestly: would you now do business with a business that doesn't have website?

 

So the simple answer is "because that is where we are!". I have often wondered about the first person who had a telephone (they had no one else to phone) -- social media is now so huge we are getting to the point where if a professional isn't listed on LindedIn they are looked upon with suspicion.

 

Many businesses recognise the importance of social media, just look at some examples of the Facebook pages from: Dorothy Perkins; Starbucks; BT; Ford ; and the list goes on.
