What's Happening in the ACH"Y/Tikkun Olam Program?

Linda Yechiel, a volunteer at the Israel Guide Dog Center for the Blind, appeared as a guest speaker for students in the South on a web-based program called JconnecT. Students were fascinated, for instance, to learn that puppy raising costs the Center $25,000, but a blind person pays nothing. "The Center is about helping blind people become independent. It was the dream of Noach Braun, our founder, that blind people have freedom. The Center is also about how one man can change the world," Linda said. JETS provided the educational aspect, and analyzed the Gemara: "My son, why do you, [a blind person] carry this torch?" He replied: As long as I have this torch in my hand, people see me and save me from the holes and the thorns and briars."  Students concluded that we are therefore obligated to seek out and help those in need. If anyone is vulnerable, any person can be helped. Linda pointed out ways in which to raise our awareness to the blind, and JconnecTers learned to keep their eye out for those in needView a specially produced JETS clip about the Guide Dog Center:

Title

"How else could these students be exposed to outstanding educators such as Semadar Goldstein, a veteran of the Hillel Torah Day School in Chicago and the Yeshiva of Flatbush in New York, and Rabbi Joel Cohn, the former principal of the SAR Academy in Riverdale, New York?  They bring with them a wealth of experience in Jewish education, and a passion for Judaism and Israel."

Rabbi Dr. Gil Perl, Dean of the Margolin Hebrew Academy Memphis, TN

Though my school has a well equipped Judaics Program, Mrs. Semadar Goldstein brings to the table something that none of the Judaic teachers can provide.   She has given our students passion and "Ruach" and a real prideful connection to the Land. I highly recommend this program that can supplement any Judaics program.

Teaching from Israel gives our students the ability to learn about Israel from a unique perspective. The format allows - and often requires - significant collaboration. Students feel a part of a special experience.

Shalhevet High School

Los Angeles

"I was concerned at first, if our students would really be able to learn over a video conference, but at this point our students look forward each week to "going to Israel". The level of learning is very high and our students are engaged and are really able to interact with Rabbi Cohn as if he were in the classroom. We are definitely interested in expanding this distance learning program"
