Rosh Chodesh bonfireLesson 1: Rosh Chodesh/Welcoming the New Month
 
Examine the method by which Rosh Chodesh was declared and announced to Diaspora Jewish communities. Students gain a greater understanding of the Jewish calendar and of the centrality of the Land of Israel to Diaspora Jewry during the Second Temple period. The lesson includes interactive clips of a visit to Mount Scopus (Mount of Olives) to experience the mountaintop bonfire system of announcing Rosh Chodesh.
 
 
 
Lesson 2: Chanuka
Israeli dreidelExplore virtual visits of the struggles cited in the story of Chanukah in Modiin and Emek Ayalon (Emmaues).  Focus on issues of Jewish sovereignty and the miraculous story of the military victory of the Maccabbees. The session draws parallels to the Israel Defense Force in the context of the rebirth of Jewish sovereignty.
 
Temple BurningLesson 3: Destruction of the Temple/10 B'Tevet
Delve into an interactive study of the destruction of the First and Second Temples.  Debate the dilemmas and decisive actions of Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai and R. Akiva to perpetuate the Rabbinical cycle of Oral Law while struggling with the loss of the Temple.
 
 Lesson 4: Tu B'Shvat
Tu Bshvat tree plantingDiscover the revitalization of Jewish life in the modern State of Israel, with a focus on the mitzvot that apply only in the Land of Israel, such as leket, shikchah, peah, trumot and ma'asrot (setting aside portions of land for the poor and tithing).  Explore the renewed relevance of these mitzvot after centuries of exile and how these laws are still used as a method of providing for those less fortunate in Israel today.
 
  
Kibbutz GaluyotLesson 5:  Purim: Jews from Around the World
A look at Kibbutz Galuyot/Gathering of the Exiles in contrast to the status of a people "scattered and dispersed among the nations," as written in Megillat Esther. The lesson focuses on the concept of natural redemption and familiarizes students with the activities lost Jews,uniting to rejoin their people and their land.
 
Participation is via Distance Learning or JETS Workshops in Israel.
Customize the amount of sessions for your school or community, ages 10-adult.  Schedule sessions at a convenient time for your school or community.

JETS was founded in Spring, 2009, by a group of experienced educators residing in Israel. Our mission is to enhance Judaic Studies programming, with a focus on Israel education. JETS streams programs to Jewish schools and communities by means of combining educational resources available in Israel with our expertise in Jewish education. Communication is implemented through video conferencing, or online platforms accessible via a standard personal computer.
