The Rambam writes it is preferable for a person to give many gifts to the poor on Purim rather than to make an extravagant meal.
Women are also obligated to observe the mitzvahs of mishloach manos and gifts to the poor. A man should send his mishloach manos to a man, and a woman should send her's to a woman.
One must fulfill these mitzvahs during the day.
If one spends Purim in a place where there are no poor people, he may give the money to a poor person after Purim.
