The name Purim comes from the word Pur ("lot"). This refers to the lot which Haman cast to determine the date on which to annhilate the Jews. In His great compassion, HaShem saved the Jews and turned their distress into a great salvation.
The fourteenth of Adar was set as a day of feasting and joy, and thanksgiving to HaShem for His deliverance.

A One Minute a Day Torah Thought !
"A Rebbe is righteous and pious because of his position, since all his actions are scrutinized. If he will transgress on the slightest issue - perhaps he will not wash his hands one time when he should - it will immediately cause a great commotion and everyone will say, 'Look, the Rebbe didn't wash his hands!' But a simple man who is not watched by anyone and still behaves with piety and yiras shomayim - he is truly a greater tzaddik than even the Rebbe!".
