Laws of Davening Shemoneh Esray
Part 1: PLACE
5. One should not pray standing on something more than 3 handbreadths high (approximately 10 1/2 inches), unless it is 4 amos long (85 inches) by 4 amos wide or fenced in.
6. It's best that one should pray directly in front of a wall, with nothing more than 10 handbreadths high (approx. 35 inches) and 4 hadbreadths wide (approx. 14 inches) separating him from the wall. Things which are used to hold the siddur, like a table or shtender, are not considered a separation even if they are bigger. Objects which are usually not moved, like the Aron Kodesh, are also not considered a separation.
