Laws of Chanukah
1. It is forbidden to use the Chanukah lights for any personal purpose, such as reading or doing work by their illumination.
This teaches us to do a Mitzvah solely for the sake of Heaven.
2. It is permitted to use the additional light of the shamash for a personal purpose. The implications in that one is rewarded, both in this world and the next, for doing a good deed beyond the call of duty.
