Jane Stanley, Steve Tollefson College Writing Programs, or CWP, has come a long way from its 19th-century origins, when students were schooled in Subject A, "Oral and Written Expression." The program now offers more than 20 courses in everything from public speaking, creative nonfiction and travel writing to new media.

Flowers For California botany, The Jepson Manual is the authoritative reference book. Now the super-sized volume - six pounds,  1,600 pages - has been revised to incorporate a wealth of new knowledge about the state's huge diversity of native plants. Scholars and staff at UC Berkeley's Jepson Herbarium oversaw the revision, published by UC Press.
