The Berkeleyan: This week on campus
NOVEMBER 17, 2011
Mobilizing to be heard
On Sproul Plaza, in the streets of Berkeley and in the state Capitol, UC Berkeley students, faculty and staff massed repeatedly over the last week to take a stand against California budget cuts and the resulting tuition hikes, and in sympathy with the Occupy movement. After a rocky start last week, the mobilization found its emotional high point in a Tuesday night rally that packed the plaza. Conjuring the spirit of Free Speech Movement leader Mario Savio, Professor Robert Reich applauded the protesters' "moral outrage." Tents went up on the steps of Sproul. And students and administrators rode the bus to Sacramento to spend a day urging state government to restore funding to UC.

During a time of heightened tensions, the shooting death of a Haas business student in a computer lab at the school shook the campus. Details continue to unfold. The gun that police said the student pointed at officers was identified as a loaded, semiautomatic handgun - a 9 mm Ruger. But why the student brought it to campus remains unknown. Counseling is being offered.
