Robotic roach with wings When UC Berkeley engineers outfitted a six-legged robotic bug with wings in an effort to improve its mobility, they unexpectedly shed some light on the evolution of flight. The wings nearly doubled the running speed of the 25-gram robot. Find out why that wasn't good enough for takeoff.

Barbara Abrams, Carolyn Bertozzi Two UC Berkeley faculty members -- Barbara Abrams, professor of epidemiology and of maternal and child health, and Carolyn Bertozzi, professor of chemistry and of molecular and cell biology -- have been named to the prestigious Institute of Medicine, one of the highest national honors in the fields of health and medicine.

Twitter was on fire with the news: Actor Johnny Depp was on campus, with musician Tom Waits and director Bruce Robinson in tow. Berkeleyside posted a video of the invitation-only interview at Wheeler Hall, about Depp's new film, The Rum Diary. Depp later played the Shattuck Down Low.

CalSol team with solar panel Berkeley's CalSol team and its student-built solar vehicle are three days into the WorId Solar Challenge, a 3,000-kilometer "rayce" (as they call it, a tip of the hat to its power source) across Australia's outback. On Day 3, the team's blog recounts "some seriously ridiculous problems with our solar arrays ... " .
