BAM/PFA building design Flowing metallic cladding plus a total makeover for an existing Art Deco-style building are the main elements of BAM/PFA's design for its new museum, theater and offices in downtown Berkeley's Arts District. The Diller Scofidio + Renfro design, just unveiled, will rise on the bones of the old UC Printing plant at Oxford and Center streets.

Kindergarten kids Most of the thousands of pre-kindergartners who take California's official English proficiency test are bound to fail, according to a new UC Berkeley study. As a result, California schools are misidentifying large numbers of new kindergartners as English learners and giving them inappropriate instruction.

Presumed Guilty screenshot Presumed Guilty, an eye-opening documentary on the Mexican criminal-justice system made by two Berkeley graduate students, has been making waves in Mexico and beyond. The film is up for three Emmy Award nominations, and an audience of 13 million is expected when it is shown on prime-time television in Mexico City this weekend.
