Newly installed Gov. Jerry Brown, inheriting a $25 billion state budget gap, yesterday proposed a $500 million cut to UC's budget. "This is a sad day for California," responded UC President Mark Yudof. For the first time in history, he said, tuition payments made by UC students would exceed what the state contributes to the university's general fund. Yudof is giving campuses specific targets for reductions and six weeks to determine how to meet them.

Andrew Szeri, dean of the Graduate Division and a professor of mechanical engineering, is taking over as faculty program head for Operational Excellence, Berkeley's ongoing effort to reduce the cost and complexity of its administrative operations. He replaces Al Pisano, who recently resigned for personal reasons.
