Holiday travel can leave people cranky and tired, in part because of jet lag. For frequent travelers, it's more than a passing annoyance, however. A new study shows that chronic jet lag can cause long-term brain changes that lead to memory and learning problems for at least a month.

Determined to reveal math's inherent beauty to the world, Berkeley math professor Edward Frenkel has made a short film, Rites of Love and Math, which is both an homage to the film Yukoku by Japanese writer Yukio Mishima and an allegory about mathematics. Even before its North American premiere Wednesday in Berkeley, though, the film is stirring controversy.

Berkeley took another stride toward sustainability Monday, as California Hall hosted its second annual "Green Coffee Hour," the kickoff for a paper-towel composting program meant to help the campus cut its greenhouse-gas emissions. Among the guests was Chancellor Robert Birgeneau, who tossed the inaugural paper towel into a new green composting bin.
