Scouter receives Hornaday Gold Badge
The Sam Houston Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America has awarded Wayne Pfluger, of Conroe, the Hornaday Gold Badge for dedicated service to conservation and the youth in the area.
The Hornaday Gold Badge is granted to adult Scouters. It is recognition of the influence the individual has had on youth and on educational programs emphasizing sound stewardship of our nation's natural resources and environmental improvement during a period of at least three years. This is a rare award; in the year 2011, there were more than one million volunteers in Boy Scouts. Only 55 Hornaday Gold Badges were awarded nationwide.More
Council achieves 2 National Endowment Awards
2011 National Major Gifts Award Major gifts will affect any council in their ability to deliver Scouting programs to more youth. The National Major Gifts Award recognizes Councils that have followed the processes that lead to securing more major gifts to sustain Scouting. The Sam Houston Area Council has incorporated eight basic processes into the Endowment Building operations.
2011 Endowment Achievement Award In addition to the Major Gifts Award, the Sam Houston Area Council has increased their Endowment fund through new permanent donor-restricted gifts. The Silver medallion was awarded to The Sam Houston Area Council for reaching $1 million in gifts to Endowment made thru the Cockrell Match Program.

July 7th...Let's Go Fishing! at Champion Chevrolet at HWY 6 in partnership with The Kidfish Foundation presents Hooked on Chevy. This fun-filled family event allows kids 16 and under to experience the thrill of reeling in a keeper at a fully-stocked catch tank. All fishing poles and bait will be provided. Trophies and prizes will be awarded hourly for the longest fish caught. This event also serves as a great platform for Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts to fulfill some of the requirements needed for the fishing belt loop and merit badge. Saturday, July 7th from 11:00am to 5:00pm at Champion Chevrolet-HWY 6, located at 8100 South Highway 6.
Houston Museum of Natural Science...Any day this summer, June 2 through August 31: Bring your Pack or Troop in a group of 12 people or more to HMNS and get Permanent Exhibit Hall tickets for $7 per person. Please join us for a fun and exciting kickoff that is sure to help you recruit new Scouts! You will hear rally suggestions, gain new ideas and methods, learn about this year's joining incentive, and work with experienced rally leaders who have been successful in your area! The 2012 Rally Plan uses proven ways to get more boys and adults excited about Cub Scouting - giving us the opportunity to change even more lives. There will be twelve kickoffs held in ten different locations across the Sam Houston Area Council., so one is sure to be close to you! Journey to Excellence for the District is a resource for Districts to use to see how they are measuring month to month towards the end of year GOLD qualification. Wood Badge Leadership Training
Wood Badge is a six-day advanced leadership course offered four times per year for Scout Leaders involved in all program levels- Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting, and Venturing. Participants will learn techniques to become better leaders. Our next courses for 2012 will occur on the following weekends (Sep 28-30 &Oct 26-28) and (Oct 18-20 & Nov 15-17). New Session...Trainer's EDGE, Aug. 18
This course is designed to help make Scouters better trainers! This training session instructs leaders on better ways of making presentations at trainings and allows the participants to practice the EDGE (Explain, Demonstrate Guide & Enable)training model and gain self-confidence through hands-on training experiences. Participants include all program areas that deliver training to adults and youth leaders. Destination Bovay...Cub Scout Resident Camp
Hey there, Cub Scouts! Come out to Bovay Scout Ranch and have some fun at Summer Safari 2012 Cub Resident Camp! An energetic and enthusiastic staff as well as a cool and refreshing water park, canoes, BMX track, Gold Mine, Shooting Sports Range, Nature Center , & Dino Dig are ready and waiting for you to come and enjoy! Venturing Summit, Aug. 10-11
The Venturing Summit is the end-of-the-Summer activity for all Venturers, Sea Scouts and friends who are thinking about joining at Bovay Scout Ranch. There will be sailing, rowing, swimming, kickball, volleyball, baseball, tomahawk throwing, blackpowder rifle, geocaching, and more. www.shacventuring.org

Sam Houston Area Golf Classic, Sept. 19th
Please join us at The Clubs of Kingwood on Wednesday, September 19, 2012.
The Classic will be played in a scramble format with prizes awarded to the top three foursomes on each course. Prizes will also be given for the longest drive and closest to the pin on each course. All proceeds from the event go to support Scouting in the 16 counties supported by the Sam Houston Area Council. Teams start at $2,000. Many sponsorship opportunities are available. Honor a Woodbager
Did you know a donation of $500 can honor a Wood Badger with a James E West Fellowship Award? The Council is very fortunate to be the recipient of The Cockrell Foundation Matching Gift Program which matches dollar for dollar on all gifts to endowment of $500-$25,000. These gifts can be pledged and paid over several months as long as they are paid in full by December 15, 2012. Announcing Endow 500
"Endow 500" campaign has set a goal of 500 gifts ranging from $500 - $25,000 for a total of $1,000,000 by December 15, 2012. When matched one for one due to the Cockrell Foundation Matching Gift Program, the resulting $2,000,000 will return $100,000 on an annual basis to Scouting. All donors will be recognized as a James E. West Fellow.
