The Cockrell Matching Gift Program

BE PREPARED, the motto of the Boy Scouts of America is what 186 donors helped do in 2011 for the Endowment of the Sam Houston Area Council.  Their gifts to the Council's Endowment matched by The Cockrell Foundation, helps the Council BE PREPARED for the future with $1,163,116 in 2011.  The Cockrell Foundation has reviewed the results and is excited to announce that the program is renewed for 2012.  All individual gifts of $500 to $25,000 paid before December 15, 2012 are matched dollar for dollar.  Gifts to Endowment remains one of the Council's highest priorities.  more

Distinguished Family Award Dinner

The 2012 Distinguished Family Award Dinner honoring the John Walker Family will take place on Tuesday, April 3, 2012 at the Hilton Americas.  Special thanks to Rich Eichler for chairing this event.   Rich and the team have set a goal to raise $1,500,000.  The event is going to be spectacular.  Chesapeake Energy Corp. CEO and co-founder Aubrey McClendon is our speaker and we will have video tributes from Rex Tillerson and others.  Sponsorship forms are available in the Development Department and we hope that you or your company will plan to attend this event to help us honor John and his family.

 

Sporting Clays

 Friends of Scouting

The Friends of Scouting (FOS) program is the annual fundraising campaign that supports Council-wide programs, camps, training and helps close gaps so that EVERY boy can join Scouting and none are left behind. So if you were unable to attend the presentation in your unit, a council coordinated call down is scheduled for March 28, 2012 and youmay receive a call with the purpose of renewing your past support. Contact your local District Executive on how to pledge your 2012 commitment prior to the annual call down. Every investment counts, no matter the size. 

  

We cordially invite all FOS chairpersons and key FOS volunteers to attend the second report meeting of this year at the Cockrell Service Center on March 21, 2012 at 6:30 p.m.  All attendees will hear best practices, "dollars raised" reports from fellow volunteers and encouraging comments from an impactful guest speaker.  Dinner will be served so please reserve your place by emailing Marisol Gonzalez at marisol.gonzalez@shac.org by Friday, March 16, 2012.

 

 

Council Coordinated Meeting, March 22

Join us at the Cockrell Scout Center on March 22 at 7:00 for Council Coordinated meeting. There will be classes showing district leadership the upcoming changes for 2012 as well as keeping those leaders abreast of the goings on within the Sam Houston Area Council.  .

 

Go for the GOLD

Journey to Excellence for the District is a resource for Districts to use to see how they are measuring month to month towards the end of year GOLD qualification. Some of the needed reports are mathematically intensive so we are working on getting these posted monthly. If you are a District Level volunteer and have questions about the Journey to Excellence District form ONLY, please e-mail questions to jtedistrict@gmail.com.

There are several training opportunities available in the Sam Houston Area Council. Please consult the council training calendar for a session that best fits your schedule. 

 

Updating Your Training Record

 

The Sam Houston Area Council Training Team is working to make sure our training records are current and correctly recorded.  To make this as simple as possible, we are including the following link to allow leaders to notify us of updates to  their records if and when necessary. Please let your leaders know this system is now in place.  And remember...a Scout is TRUSTWORTHY! After running a training validation on themselves,  leaders can report training here that is NOT showing on their MyScouting.org training records. 
 

 

Wood Badge

Wood Badge is BSA's ultimate leadership training for adults, where participants are immersed in a six-day course covering the theory, practice, and experience of appropriate skills for leading others within Scouting and beyond the BSA.  Spring schedule. You must complete basic training for your position and then get your applications in to the council office , Program Services Department. For more information 

 

 

 

 

National Youth Leadership Training

 

NYLT is an exciting, action-packed program designed to provide youth members with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home troops and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others. The NYLT course centers around the concepts of what a leader must BE, what he/she must KNOW, and what he/she must DO. Powder Horn High Adventure Training

Powder Horn is a fun six day course designed to expose adult and older youth leaders of Venturing, Sea Scout, Boy Scout and Varsity units to resources and experts available to southeast Texas Scouting units and to provide hands-on experience with exciting activities for older youths. Powder Horn exposes participants to high adventure activities for older youth; provides an introduction to the resources available to successfully lead Crews, Ships, Teams and Troops through a program of high adventure; and helps leaders feel comfortable offering challenging outdoor activities, while balancing fun with safety, health and responsibility.  May 4-6 and May 18-20, 2012 Registration and more 

 

 

Silver Beaver Award

The Silver Beaver Award was introduced in 1931 and is a council-level distinguished service award of the Boy Scouts of America. Recipients of this award are registered Scouters who have made an impact on the lives of youth through service given to the Council. This is the highest recognition a council can bestow on an adult volunteer leader.  To nominate a person for the Silver Beaver Award for 2011, the deadline for submission is May 1, 2012. more

 

 

 

 Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturing, Explorers

Cub Scout Resident Camp

Cub Scout Resident camp is a three-night campout for Scouts entering 2nd - 5th grade for the '12-'13 school year. From Scout skills to rank advancements, these camps are full of fun and learning.  Resident include activities such as: seeking treasure in the Lost Mine, archeological quest at the Dinosaur Dig, high speed pedal action at the BMX Bike Track, Robin Hood Style adventure at the Archery Range, marksmanship at Fort Bluebell's BB Gun Range, action at the K.S. "Bud" Adams Sports Field, Pow Wow at the Indian Village, exploring camp at the Nature Center, and splashing in the water at the David Weekley Family Water Park.  Choose from one of eight sessions in June and July.  Registration

 

NEW...Webelos Coyote Trail Extreme

Coyote Trail Extreme (CTX) Camp Program is a specialty adventure weekend camp program for Webelos.  Webelos will work on Arrow of Light requirements while trekking across the Ranch to exciting Outpost program areas. With an introduction to the patrol method, Webelos gain insight into the importance of team work and an introduction to Boy Scouts.  There are two different programs: WOW (Webelos Outdoor Warrior) and WON (Webelos Orienteering and Navigation). While both programs focus on Arrow of Light requirements, WOW has a shooting sports emphasis and WON has an orienteering emphasis.MORE   Leader's guide

 

District Day Camp / Twilight Camp 2012 

Save your district date for 2012 "Jungle Adventure" Day / Twilight Camp next summer. Scouts entering first thru fifth grade for the 2012-13 school year may attend. Scouts will make new friends and have fun earning rank advancements, shooting BBs and archery, learning new skills, playing sports, games and making crafts. Each camper will receive a t-shirt and patch.
Day Camp is a great supplement for the exciting advancement program offered at Bovay Scout Ranch Resident Camp

 

 

Trash Bash, March 31

Each year, beginning in 2012, the Sam Houston Area Council will select a Council-wide service program to educate youth on local environmental issues, serve our community and increase awareness of Scouting's impact.  Find a full listing of projects and sign-up info at trashbash.org  More on conservation projects

 

 

SHAC Corps 

SHAC Corps is an opportunity for troops and crews to give back to camp in the form of a day of service. The Order of the Arrow is leading this opportunity, but this service project is open to all Boy Scouts and Venturers. All you have to do is bring your personal camp gear. Camp is providing the food and a special Council Shoulder Patch that will only be available to those who provide service. You can attend more than one weekend to collect all five CSP's. Service projects will include creating new campsites and clearing new programs areas. Upcoming dates:  March 23-25, April 25-27, May 18-20, June 1-3  more

Rough Riders is the NEW High Adventure experience'  This premiere campsite located on the Devil's Backbone is committed to our senior Scouts who will experience a breath taking ride down a 1000' zip line, in preparation for a 2000' zip line that is guaranteed to start your heart and take your breath away. Discover how to saddle and bridle your own horse on an overnight horseback trek in the outback of El Rancho Cima. Learn the saga of our early heritage at the dugout in Apache Springs during an overnighter. Encounter unique rappelling and ascending on a real rock cliff and much more.   

Venturing Rendezvous

Council-wide recruiting for the SHAC Venturing Program is March 16-18.  Come alone or with your crew and bring your friends to the HUGE EVENT. Activities include.. The World Famous Pony Hop, Obstacle Course, Camp-wide Tug O War, St. Patrick's Day festivities and Crew competitions.  Register by March 9

 

 

 

Sail Daze, April 8

Sea Scouts are celebrating their 100th birthday in 2012 with the upcoming event, Sail Daze for Sea Scouts, Venturers and Boy Scout youth ages 14 and up.   Youth will be sailing a variety of small craft on Galveston Bay from Houston Yacht Club on April 8th.  For more info, contact Bryan Talley at 713 419 3920. The first official centennial event in America was held in Sam Houston Area Council over the Martin Luther King weekend.  Two hundred and fifty-four Sea Scout youth and adults gathered at Camp Mohawk in Alvin on Saturday to begin three days of intense rank advancement training, fun, and fellowship.  Record-breaking attendance included eleven SHAC ships and 16 visiting ships from ten councils from across Texas and six other states.  

 

National Jamboree

 Order of the Arrow

Arrowman BASH, March 30 - Apr 1

Arrowman's Bash is a weekend event at Camp Strake that allows Arrowman to recommit themselves to the principles of our order, brotherhood, cheerfulness and service.  This year's theme is "Go Big or Go Home."  Saturday begins with service to camp.  The afternoon is full of sports, games, competition, tomahawk, archery, rifle, life sized angry bird, photo scavenger hunt, Native American activities and many more surprises.  Arrowman will camp with their Chapter for a weekend of non-stop fun, food, fellowship and celebration. OA Trail crew

Colonneh Lodge is proud to announce our first OA Trail Crew experience at El Rancho Cima, during Spring Break, 2012. The program will run from Friday evening (3/9) through Tuesday afternoon (3/13). The cost is $36.50 per participant, and space is limited to 24 youth. You must be at least 14 years old, and in good physical condition.  This is the Pilot Program of bringing the OA Trail Crew program to El Rancho Cima. This 4 day program will enable participants to experience El Rancho Cima like never before, with opportunities to provide "cheerful service" to help in our effort to make Cima the top camp in South Texas. In addition to service, participants will develop fellowship with other participants, and will also have opportunities to experience some of Cima's most popular high adventure programs. All participants will receive a crew T-shirt, as well as other recognition and commemorative items, along with meals, and cracker-barrels.
