Play Dodge ball, June 18
Whether you need to let off some steam, build teamwork, promote wellness or just have some fun - join the Sam Houston Area Council's Corporate Dodgeball Challenge. A single day of competition is scheduled for June 18 in The Woodlands at the Legends Sports Complex. Form a team and challenge others to do the same. 6 players with up to 4 alternates make up a team (must be 18 or over to play). 5 minute sets. inquiries Dodgeball@shac.org
Friends of Scouting Soars ahead
Districts throughout the council are continuing to solicit donations from area businesses, foundations, scout families, alumni and first time individual supporters. District leadership is striving to reach 100% of a "district-specific" established goal. Congratulations to the following districts that have reported 100% achievement as of May 30: Big Cypress, Lone Star, Exploring North, Orion, Antares, WL Davis and Aldine-Pathfinder. All District Chairpersons, Finance Chairpersons, Key Finance Volunteers, professional staff and spouses are encouraged to attend the Victory Celebration Monday, June 27th at the Crowne Plaza-Downtown from 6-8 pm. 2011 Sporting Clays Event
On April 28, a record number of 75 Teams / 300 Shooters participated in the Sporting Clays event at the Rio Brazos Hunting Preserve.Over $205,000 in net income was raised (+20% vs year ago). The Top Gun Award went to Bobby Fowler who shot 96 targets out of 100 possible. Special thanks to Chairman, Wendel Skolaski with Amegy Bank and Hess Corporation, Gold Underwriter. We appreciated all who participated and our auction donors who provided 72 silent auction packages and 17 live auction items.
Over 1,000 Eagles Took Flight

Members of the newly emerged Marvin Kiel Eagle Class gathered on Saturday, April 30, at The Berry Center, for the annual Gathering of Eagles Reception hosted by the Eagle Scout Association for the Sam Houston Area Council.
Exemplifying outstanding community service, Eagle Scout John-Russell Thornburg received the Glenn A. and Melinda W. Adams National Eagle Scout Service Project of the Year Award. Thornburg of Troop 1377, chartered by Kingwood United Methodist Church, completed a fence project benefitting the Woodlands Hills Elementary School in Kingwood, Texas. As we begin our second century of Scouting, we want to ensure that every Scout receives the very best program possible. Journey to Excellence (JTE) can help achieve this vision through benchmarks on advancement, retention, training and service.
Highlight: Patrol/Squad Method
Summer camp and summer high adventure activities are ideal times to emphasize the patrol method. The troop's patrols should camp and operate together in summer camp. High adventure activities are more likely to involve an "on the spot" patrol or squad, but still teach the same skills of teamwork and sharing the group's vision, challenges, and duties. See goals associated with this element of JTE. Each month, you should be reviewing progress toward your JTE goals for the end of your charter year. BSA has provided a an aid to tracking

Fall Unit Health Status Report Interview
Commissioner staff will be contacting unit leaders to review the 2011 Fall Unit Health Status Report. The form and corresponding short interview by the commissioners allow them to work together with unit service staff in identifying both the strong and weak points in their program. Think about your concerns, specific unit needs and options for improvement when you schedule your interview.

Summer Cub Resident Camp
Sign up for the upcoming summer resident camp in the best camp in the country, BOVAY SCOUT RANCH! There is still plenty of room and plenty of FUN to go around! Advancement at all levels is being planned and each Scout will receive their very own passport to be stamped as they complete each area. There are 2 Cub Sessions and 2 Webelos Sessions.

Pack Outing Weekends
On designated weekends, a pack will allowed to camp at Bovay Scout Ranch with all program planned and meals cooked and carried out by their own pack. Campsites, restrooms and showers will available. This will allow the packs to have use of the facility, but without the cost of food, staff and program. Call 713 756 9123

Minto Rendevous For Sea Scouts, Sept. 9-11
Summer Camp Sea Scouts from across Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Arkansas join Sam Houston Area Sea Scouts every year for the Annual Minto Rendezvous. Minto is a traditional rendezvous where youth test their nautical skills and maritime knowledge. In addition to the standard events, this year a Flotsam Flotilla race will be run. Each ship is encouraged to design and build a boat made of nothing but packing tape and cardboard. Competition promises to be fierce and hilarious. Minto will be held at Bovay Scout Ranch. Rough Riders, Registration Deadline TODAY
Rough Riders is the NEW High Adventure experience for older Scouts at El Rancho Cima. Scouts will be surrounded by the beauty of the Texas Hill Country while participating in activities designed for older Scouts. Activities to include a unique real rock rappelling, ascending, a canopy zip line, horseback riding, wilderness survival, dug-out (mine shaft) overnighter, river rafting trip and more. more info

Bovay Scout Ranch is the place to be this summer! And we are in need of workers and volunteers to help lead our Cub Scouts. We are looking for staff, ages 12-14 who love the outdoors and are looking to develop leadership qualities that they will put to greater use over the coming years. These young staffers will serve as campsite hosts and can enroll in our Counselors in Training Program. They will receive training on what is expected of leaders, provision of customer service, and development of camping skills. We also need qualified lifeguards for the pool and canoeing station. Conservation guides will help scouts will plant crops and flowers. For the Lost Mine, we need expert and amateur geologists who assist in the exploration for and identification of native Texas rocks and minerals. Interviews for potential staff and volunteers at the Council Office on June 2nd and 3rd, beginning at 6:30pm.

Indian Summer August 1-6
Indian Summer will be held at the Ridgecrest Conference Center, Asheville, N.C. the week of August 1 - 6, 2011 and will expand your understanding of the American Indian culture. Opportunities will be focused on learning to dance, making outfits and crafts, and singing. For OA ceremonialists, highlights will include acting skills and techniques workshops taught by real-world theater professionals.
