The Social Entrepreneurship Institute (SEI) of the College of Business and Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) are proud to announce an exciting opportunity for University of Illinois students. Building on a previous student's trip to Uganda, the College of Business is planning on sending a delegation of six students in partnership with SIFE and COVE Alliance USA, to Uganda, during May of 2012 for two weeks. They plan to offer a series of seminars on marketplace and entrepreneurship literacy as well as agricultural entrepreneurship to community members and vocational school audiences in the Kapeeka area.
Joining them are two members from a service learning class at the University called Learning in Community (LINC), sponsored by the School of Engineering. For two consecutive semesters, COVE Alliance has partnered with LINC which allows students of any major to work on a social service learning project. Last semester's project delivered a thorough agriculture curriculum for maize cultivation. It will be used as a guideline in developing agricultural vocational education for St. Jerome secondary school students as well as for community training at large. Currently LINC students are working on projects in the areas of vocational education, culture and water/power. The LINC coordinator and future project manager will accompany SIFE students to carry out feasibility surveys produced by students this semester.
Pictures of their journey will be available in the July newsletter. |

COVE Hosts Northwestern University Students

|
Submitted by Leonard Ssebadduka and Northwestern students
On March 14, 2012 COVE Uganda hosted four Northwestern University students (Eric Chang, Anthony Jakubiak, Rene Qian, and Sandy Sokoloski for a one day visit. The purpose of the visit
was to meet the medical staff, conduct interviews with them, do observations on patient care, and test out their diagnosis device. They were welcomed by the medical staff.

The main focus of the interviews was on integrated management on childhood illness. There was good cooperation among the medical staff and they managed to answer all the group's questions. The COVE medical staff benefited from this visit through free dialogue and the sharing of new ideas on how to handle patients.
At 1:30 pm the medical staff and guests shared a home cooked Ugandan meal. Later, the guests were able to meet the St. Jerome COVE Primary students who entertained them with a traditional dance and some songs. In return, the students received gifts of bags and T-Shirts. Before leaving for Kampala, the guests made a brief visit to the Little Servants of the Sacred Heart Sisters Convent (the sisters who work with COVE), where they were served drinks and mandazi. On the way to Kampala, they stopped at the Consolata Fathers' House and were warmly welcomed by Fr. Steven Mutuku, Assistant Parish Priest (Pastor) of Our Lady Consolata Parish Kapeeka.
The four students later enjoyed dinner at the Fairway Hotel with Richard Mugisha (COVE Administrative Assistant), Fr. Hilary Muheezangango (COVE Alliance Executive Director) and two other University students who had remained in Kampala doing a program. It was a day of joy and fun.
Special thanks to Carol Armstrong who connected the COVE medical staff to these Northwestern students. |

Bookfriends Makes Reading Fun for Students | | |
|

Simon seemed very shy at first. Both of his parents have died and he is in charge of his brothers and sisters. He comes home from school, takes care of his siblings and then begins his homework. Children in Uganda have learned how to be grown-ups at a very young age.
He is doing well in secondary school and enjoys reading books. Reading for fun is not usual for students. They view books as study, not just enjoyment. When he was asked what kind of book he would like he asked for a dictionary. Amazing!
As the years have gone by he has become a confident, outgoing student.
Bookfriends, a nonprofit organization, is planning to ship 22,000 books to Uganda to be distributed to many of the schools COVE Alliance children are attending. Fundraising is in process but more funds are needed. Please go to www.bookfriends.org and donate at your comfort level. You can help create an opportunity for these children to read for fun!
