August 2011

Greetings!

The journey to Uganda has been a life altering experience for all of the new timers. Time in traveling, new sounds, and new sights awaken new possibilities and excitement. Concerns for lost luggage (from the first group) was quickly erased when the children welcomed them with joyful singing and dancing.  Isn't this the COVE Alliance mission - the children?  Read what the groups have accomplished and wonder how they must feel now after such a beautiful encounter.

Updates from Uganda Delegates

When the Indiana group arrived, with the seasoned travelers, at the St. Jerome COVE Center, wonder was already in motion. "Let the children come to me", Mark 10: 14 is painted on the dispensary wall at the St. Jerome COVE Center and below that inscription is the living tree that is stamped with the handprints of the children. They built a swing set complete with swings, bars, rings, ladder and a rock climbing wall. Instructional murals were painted around the blackboards in the classrooms. This is not an easy task in Uganda.

The Vernon Hills high school students flavored the countryside, observed the local commerce and began teaching. They visited boarding schools and vocational schools. Many hours of travel was a part of that experience. They taught at Standard high school and gave a workshop to the local merchants and farmers. They also challenged the Standard high school students to a game of volleyball. We don't know who won, but I am sure that VHHS gave them competition.

The VHHS and the Indiana group  have all made a connection to the children, the teachers, and the community. They have linked them to the USA.  They have visited with Bishop Paul in Luweero, extended themselves to the Lion's club in Kampala (to request vision testing for the children), and the children have been enriched by a trip to the zoo in Entebbe. It is a rare event to go away from the local community.

At the COVE campus, the water tanks are now in place, the new primary school is amazing and the community is advancing.

The children at the St. Jerome Center have taken their exams and will be on holiday for the next 2 weeks.  The last group of delegates will be leaving on August 15, 2011.

Please continue to keep all of the delegates in your prayers.

Peace and blessings to all.

'Then and Now' of Sponsored Children
Sempa Ronald
A Word from Sponsors Sue and Ray Wynn
augold
Ronald in 2006.

Ray and I had already moved out of Saint Mary of Vernon parish when we met Fr. Hilary.  His amazing ability to draw people in to his grand plan to help disadvantaged children was astounding.

We chose Ronald from the many pictures of prospective students.  Who could resist that darling little boy?  Ronald and his four siblings are typical kids who help at home, like football and have a great need for support educationally, nutritionally and medically.

Ronald is doing well in school and has grown into a fine young man these 5 years since we began sponsorship.  His first letter to us, shown below, had to be written by an assistant.  Ronald was able to write a few numbers and letters at that time.

Dear Ray and Sue Wynn,

My name is Sempa Ronald.  I live at a village called Kisimula.  I am a boy.  Thank you so much for accepting to be my sponsor.  May God bless you so much.  I am in primary class one at Kaddrinda Primary School.

At home I help my family to fetch water, sweep the compound and clean dishes.  Now I can not write to you but when I stay in school I will be able to do so in future.  Through your help I am able to be in school.

Yours,

Sempa Ronald

Ronald's latest letters to us have been independently written, adorned with pictures that he drew.  Below is a letter from Ronald written in 2010:

Dear my sponsor,

This year 2010 has been good to me since I was promoted to primary four.  I am still in Bugabo Primary School.  I wish you all the best during Easter season.

Love,

We also have two older girls whom we sponsor.  Flavia wants to be a nurse and Joanita a nun.  We hope to help them achieve their dreams.

You too can have this wonderful experience of sponsoring a child, who is on the waiting list, through COVE. The reward will be the bond you two will develop on your mutual journey for a better world.  For details, please visit
