July 2011

Greetings!

Here we are in the summer of 2011 and it is already a celebration of preparation. Twenty-three students, adults, and COVE members will be embarking on their trip to Uganda. Some will be beginning their trip on July 4.  The gathering of sports equipment, plans to build soccer and basketball areas and make embellishments to the school have been completed.  It is now time for them to go forward with renewed love of God in their hearts. It has not been an easy decision to leave the comforts of America and learn the beautiful simple lives of those who have so much less, but they are committed to this decision.  It is a time of wonder and uncertainty. Read on for more information.

As Missionary Groups Depart for Uganda,
Please Pray For Them

This July 4, the first of three groups going to Uganda this summer will depart from O'Hare.  It is an exciting time for COVE Alliance. Over the next two months, COVE Uganda will host the largest number of delegates ever. In total, 23 people will make the trip. Of those 23, eighteen will be going for the first time.   What a wonderful adventure they have in store.

The groups will consist of high school and college students, teachers from VHHS, members of the St Mary of Vernon parish and Cove Alliance, adults from Bright, Indiana, as well as a classmate of Fr. Hilary's who is the pastor of St. Theresa  Benedictis of the Cross Parish in Bright. While there, they will be painting the new classrooms, clearing areas for crops and a soccer field, building playground equipment for the younger children, and working with the students on academics, art and music.  They will also be visiting schools in the outlying areas and visiting some of the children in their homes so that they can see what life is like on a daily basis.

Among the other activities planned are attending a pilgrimage to St. Kizito, the dedication of the new school block, being at the ordination of Pete Mukasa, who just graduated from St. Mary of the Lake Seminary, challenging some of the local high school students to a volleyball game, going on a three-day safari and, of course shopping for souvenirs.

For those of us who have been to Uganda before we know what a life altering experience it can be. The simplicity of life there truly allows you to witness God in everything from an exuberant greeting of the children running to you shouting "Muzungu" (white person) to the generosity of the people who have so little yet insist on giving you gifts of fruits, vegetables and poultry. God has chosen to bless all 23 of us by allowing us to travel to Africa to do the work that Jesus taught us to do by His own examples.

WE ARE ASKING YOU TO PLEASE PRAY FOR ALL OF US AND PRAY THAT OUR MISSION MAY TRULY GLORIFY HIS NAME. WE ALSO ASK YOU TO PRAY FOR THE SAFE RETURN OF ALL INVOLVED.

It is our hope that we will be able to send weekly updates on what we are doing. That will all depend on whether there is electricity.  Updates will be posted on the COVE website so please check us out at www.COVEAlliance.org.  We thank all of you in advance for your prayers, or as they say in Uganda, "webale nyo."

Caroline in 2006.

When I first heard Fr Hilary speak (as a seminarian) at St Mary of Vernon about his background in Uganda, my husband and I were touched. We were later moved by his faith, enthusiasm, and vision for his community. With his humble request for a well collection I remember praying for success. It was like the miracle of the loaves and fishes and several wells were built.

COVE Alliance was born because God laid that same vision on the hearts of many hard working, loving, generous volunteers and sponsors. The loaves and fishes multiplied and we wanted to be part of this ministry. We were excited to be one of the initial sponsors.

With assistance, she wrote the following letter to Donald and Pat back in 2006:

Dear Beloved Sponsors,

I appreciate for the support you provide to me through COVE Alliance.  My health has been good.  I am now in my first year of first term taking catering.  I wish you a happy Easter.  Send greetings to your family and friends.

Best wishes,

Nansamba Caroline

We have seen our Caroline grow from a shy child with a beautiful smile, who likes to draw, to a young lady about to graduate from culinary school. We have enjoyed corresponding with her but even more, have cherished the first hand stories of the COVE volunteers who have visited Uganda and returned with stories and pictures of Caroline.  She is ready to move away from home and go to another village to work as an independent young woman.  She is thankful for the support and we know it has taken so little to bring her so far. We know we have provided the opportunity to change one young life in Uganda. Just as importantly- this young woman knows that around the world, one family cares enough to provide for her health care and education. For us, the reward is in the knowledge that Caroline Nansamba has a brighter future. We pray for continued blessings.

Donald and Pat received the following letter from Caroline earlier this year.  She was unassisted in the letter.

Dear Beloved,

I am happy for the help you provide to me through COVE Alliance.  This third term is for promotion and I promise you that I will be promoted (pass exams) for so that next year I finish my studies.  My health has been good together with my family.  I wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year 2011.

With love and blessings,

2011 Summer Mission Groups Respond with Goals

Three groups of COVE supporters will be taking mission trips to Kapeeka, Uganda this summer. The first is a group of students , adults and Fr Tom from St. Theresa Benedictis Parish in Bright, Indiana. The second group from Vernon Hills High School along with teachers, a senior student and a past graduate of the high school. The third group will consist of COVE  members and other COVE enthusiasts. Each group has unique goals they intend to achieve during their missions.

Indiana group:
"We have a dream to do mission work in Africa. When the Holy Spirit is at work anything is possible." They plan to build a basketball court and paint a mural in the classrooms. As Kim Sprague, the youth minister at St. Theresa Benedictis of the Cross Parish in Bright, Indiana said, "This mission trip is bigger than any one of us and I am grateful to witness God's presence in the lives of our teens and in the work being done by COVE".

Vernon Hills group: They are planning to continue to paint the schools, teach classes in various schools, and provide support to the Uganda staff. One youth said he was going to leave all of his electronic devices at home and immerse himself in the culture of the community. He plans to take this information back to groups at the university, where he is currently attending, to continue project development.

Cove Members and enthusiasts: Plan to work in the medical dispensary, teach a class in the schools, and support the needs of the Uganda staff.

As the enthusiasm is building in our USA mission groups, the Uganda staff is in awe and wonder of the people who are willing to help with the campus.
