May 2011

Greetings!

Fr. Hilary again inspired us with a successful message from Uganda: Five of the eight children who graduated are employed, the primary children have developed a reputation as good students and are able to pass the national exams, and the St. Jerome COVE campus is aglow with new opportunities for the children and the community to continue to expand their world through education. These are the reasons that the fundraiser was so successful. This is a real dream in action. Read On!

Fr. Hilary Speaks at COVE Fundraiser
The Speech Given on April 9th, 2011

ilaryspeech2011

Dear friends and supporters,

I am so happy and exceedingly humbled to stand before you on this memorable event, which connects us directly to the orphaned and vulnerable children we take care of in Kapeeka, Uganda. I bring you greetings from my Bishop, Paul Ssemogerere , who allows me to come to the USA every year. I bring you greetings from the COVE Alliance staff headed by Mr. Richard Mugisha, my Administrative Assistant and, above all, I bring you the greetings from our beloved children.

It is the sixth year since COVE Alliance was founded. Over these past six years Cove Alliance has achieved so much.  The impact of this work is greatly recognized by the community, the state and the church.  In the health sector since August 2008, 13,600 patients have been treated at the St. Jerome Health Center. In 2010 alone the overall number of the cases treated was 2,052, with over 24% being Malaria related cases. Two Hundred and One mothers attended the antenatal clinic.

In 2009 the St. Jerome Primary School opened with two classes (Primary 1 & 2) with 65 children. This year the school goes up to Primary three with 102 children. Eighty of the children reside at the school (in the dorms), and 22 are day scholars (they walk to school). I am so pleased with the way the parents/guardians of the children have picked up the spirit of responsibility.  They are contributing whenever possible by visiting the school, talking to the teachers about the performance of their children and attending workshops and training that we offer regarding their children. This is a miracle!

In 2011 we begin the construction of the Vocational School whose academic year will begin in 2012. I can't wait to see it take off, for this is the core of the whole program. The program intends to offer children life skills so that they become capable of sustaining themselves and their families in the future. Five of the eight children that graduated from their Vocational Training are now employed and already earning a living.

I would like to conclude by thanking everyone who has done anything to support COVE Alliance's mission of providing children with social services in a Christian atmosphere that fosters acceptance, love, and shared responsibilities.

God rewards you all abundantly!

'Then and Now' of Sponsored Children
Tereza (Teddy) Nazlulemba
A Letter by Sponsors Tony & Shelia Tinetti
2007
Teddy in 2006.

Since 2006, we have been sponsoring a child named Nazlulemba Tereza. We had enjoyed getting to know Fr. Hilary when he was with us at St Mary's, and were really inspired by him and the volunteer parishioners who worked to form COVE Alliance.  We remember the initial efforts of our parish to raise money to establish some wells for clean drinking water in Uganda, and thought to ourselves how sad it was that there were people in this world walking miles a day just to get clean water. When we had the opportunity to sponsor a child, we were really just looking to be able to financially help someone who was less fortunate, but what we received was a whole lot more.

We first met Teddy, our sponsored child, by way of letter.  At that time she was 13 years old, in the sixth grade, and was living with her uncle and cousins.  We exchanged photos, along with information about our families and our interests.  We kept a picture of her on our refrigerator and kept her in our prayers, and we know that we were in hers.

It has been great to see her grow academically and develop through COVE Alliance. We recently received the following letter from Teddy.  In it is the good news that she completed her courses, graduated, and is moving on to a career in Catering and Hotel Management.

Dear Tony and Shelia Tinetti,

It's always good to account for someone who's happy to help others when things need help.  I thank you for the help you have provided me since 2006 the first day you adopted as your daughter up to date.  I have completed my course in catering and hotel management.

You have been there for me along with love care and support and that's why you can never be forgotten from my heart.  I and my family use also this chance to thank you for what you have done to my family and may the almighty God bless, bless, bless you, you, you more and more.

Yours in love,
Nalulemba Teddy

This was a child who needed assistance to write a letter to us just a few short years ago, and now she is moving on to a fulfilling job. What an incredible accomplishment!

Along the way Teddy has seemed content even though she had so little.  I think this is a great lesson for all of us to recognize how fortunate we all are.  A child like Teddy does not really need much, only a chance. We look forward to continuing to give children like Teddy that same chance through COVE Alliance.

'Seeds of Hope'
A Journey to Joy, Peace, and A Sustainable Future

The Seeds of Hope fundraiser greeted more than 185 guests on April 9. It was an evening of good news from Uganda, interactive dancing, including the Ugandan dance, and the fun-filled Heads and Tails game. There was also a winner of a $1,000 dollar shopping spree at Macy's as well as winners of two cash prizes of $750 and $250.

Guests visited the African Store, were entertained by African Drummers from Hawthorn Middle School South, and browsed the exciting silent auction. It was a night of fun, reconnecting with friends, and shopping.

Thanks to the guests, donors, and volunteers, the fundraiser brought in approximately $27,000 to benefit COVE Alliance's education and healthcare projects in Kapeeka, Uganda.

Thank you to everyone who participated in any way!
