Monthly Newsletter

January 2011

Greetings!

Happy New Year! In this month's newsletter we want to extend a Five Year Happy Anniversary to COVE Alliance sponsorship. In last month's newsletter you saw the changes in the campus and how it has grown in building as well as family spirit.  Now you will be seeing, each month, one of the children that has been sponsored since 2006. We call this, the "then and now thanks to COVE Sponsorship." As sponsors, I know you have seen the difference in how the children have progressed in their letter writing as well as the physical changes you have seen in their pictures. They are growing up. As Headmaster, Joseph says of the children, "They are becoming good citizens".  Please pass this letter to your friends and encourage interest in an organization that shows good fortune and prosperity, in body, mind and spirit.  As always, thank you all for your generous support!

St. Jerome COVE Children's Christmas Celebration
and Graduation Thanksgiving Ceremony

The Christmas Party/Graduation Thanksgiving Mass and celebration took place at the St Jerome COVE Center- Kapeeka on Sunday, December 5, 2010. Over 500 people attended from the community including the catechists of Our Lady of Consolata Parish, the head teachers of the 39 schools where COVE sponsored children attend school, COVE Uganda Board Members, COVE Health Unit Management Committee Members, COVE Primary School Management Committee Members, local leaders in Kapeeka Sub-county, parents, guardians and all sponsored
children.

Fr Hilary speaks at the celebration.

The Mass commenced at 11:00 a.m. with the arrival of the guest of honor/main celebrant, Rev. Fr. Achilles Ssemakula, the Pastoral Coordinator of Kasana-Luweero Diocese.  The primary school children of St. Jerome COVE and the COVE staff members headed up the singing during mass and the students continued to entertain the guests afterwards. Each child sponsored by COVE Alliance received a mosquito net as a Christmas gift. Also, 20 students who performed well in their studies (best students) were given a pair of bed sheets.  The 8 graduates of Kasaala Vocational Training Schools were thanked for their hard work and endurance in completing their courses. They will soon be receiving gifts from COVE Alliance to help them begin their new careers.

The ceremony concluded with a vast assortment of food and drink. After the meal, all of the sponsored children joined together and danced until 6:30 p.m.  A few of our sponsored children were interviewed after the function. Ian Nsereko, a primary-one pupil at St. Jerome COVE Primary School during the interview noted that he was so happy for now having a mattress, a blanket, and a mosquito net. He continued to say that his grandmother could not afford to buy these basic necessities.
He is so thankful for his sponsor.

"Then and Now" of Sponsored Child
                   Christine Naluwu
Sponsored by Daniel & Joann Herdmann

Christine Naluwu was born on December 6th, 1994 in the village of Kaboque.  She grew up living with her aunt because her father passed away, and in 2006 she was still living in her aunt's home.  In 2006, she attended a community based school in Bukokoloo, Uganda.  The following is a letter to her sponsor written in 2006:

Jan 2006
Naluwu Christine, 2006.

Hello Sponsor,

You are precious to me and my entire family.  This letter is to let you know how much I love you.  I wish you a happy Easter.  I am in school and healthy because of your support.

Yours,
Naluwu Christine

Christine has since completed 6th grade at Victory Primary School and was recently promoted to grade 7.  As indicated in her note to follow, she excels in mathematics and has even entertained the idea of becoming a teacher, though her heart seems to be set on nursing.  The following is a letter recently received by Christine's sponsor:

Naluwu Christine, 2010.

To my dear Sponsor,

Thank you for the gifts you sent to me.  Mathematics is still my best subject and I think I can teach you!  Yes, I still want to be a nurse and I thank you for your support.  May the almighty God bless you for me.

Yours in love,

Naluwu Christine

Medical Dispensary - Education and Caring
By Carol Armstrong

During my visit to Uganda this summer I had the opportunity to spend time with the medical staff.  This dispensary serves a population of 24,068 people (2002 census report), and provides care for our children.

It is a challenge for all of them. Since their opening in August 2008, they have treated one thousand and eighty-four clients in their outpatient department. Diagnostic laboratory services were provided to one thousand and forty-seven clients to test for HIV, Typhoid and Malaria.

There is a local need to educate the community (children and adults) on prevention and treatment of diseases, such as upper respiratory infections, typhoid, malaria, and HIV.  The nurses have looked at those issues and have formulated a plan to teach and provide the needed education.
Since we have received the grant from Mary Alphonse Bradley, this will be feasible. In home monitoring is a challenge just getting to the locations, but this staff is up to the challenge.

They began with our children. They are teaching them that there is a way to prevent disease and are giving them a concrete example of what can be done. When the children go home at break they know how they need to care for themselves. They bring hope to the community. Neighboring schools tell us that they are so thankful to have the clinic available. It provides services for the children at their schools.

While we were there we had the opportunity to see the dispensary in action. Several clients were admitted to the dispensary. One adult was admitted for treatment of typhoid and two children had malaria. Bill's and my sponsored child, Agnes, was one of them.  The first day we arrived Agnes was part of our welcoming. She was singing and dancing with enthusiasm.  Two days later, when we came back, she was in the dispensary lethargic and feverish with medication infusing into her little hand, trying hard to smile. The nurses attended to her in a loving manner, with medication, personal hygiene and nutrition. As all children do, she bounced back quickly, as you can see from the picture. Her musical friends, Gladys and Simon, were there to support her as well. It is a community/family effort to support these children.

Leonard, the lab tech, instructed me in how he diagnoses typhoid, malaria and TB using reagent paper and the microscope. I felt privileged to be instructed in such a knowledgeable manner. It took me back to my microbiology days-years ago.

The dispensary staff is invested in our children and the community in which their families live. I learned a lot from all of the staff. Commitment is the key. The journey is led by love.
