September 2010

Greetings!

Joseph, the COVE Uganda Headmaster,  has expressed clearly the sense of Family that the delegates experienced when they visited the St. Jerome COVE Center in June of 2010. He speaks of the challenges and rewards that a family experiences. There are many opportunities for you, in the USA, to participate in that sense of family that has reached across so many miles. For example, become a part of the COVE USA Board, committee member, sponsor, and/or participate in the fundraiser that will take place on April 9, 2011. This is a chance for you to embrace the spirit of the COVE Family. We welcome all of you who wish to participate!

Family Spirit Key for Success At COVE Primary School, Reports Head Teacher

Joseph New

Mr. Joseph Lule, the Head teacher of St. Jerome COVE Primary School, Kapeeka, recently reported to COVE U.S on his experience as a head teacher and his relationship with the children.  The following is an excerpt from his letter:

My first time to come to St. Jerome COVE Center in Kapeeka was the day I was called for the interviews last October. The journey from Luweero, my home town, to Kapeeka initially seemed a threat to me because of the long distance. But after a while I made a final decision to come and work. The St. Jerome COVE Primary School has been a blessing to me because I have been able to exhibit my talents and also work with talented and hard
working people.

JosephMy life has become very meaningful and interesting. Here at the center there is much more emphasis on family spirit than in the school I previously taught at. This family spirit has encouraged all the staff members to feel that they are loved and important in the community.

While at work I have had a number of challenges and I am constantly learning new things.  I thank  God for people like Mr. Richard Mugisha, the Administrative Assistant, and others in the community who have been extremely helpful in guiding me during my time in Kapeeka.  Every day I endeavor to perform my duties to educate, counsel and guide the abandoned children of Uganda. I have been able to do this thanks in large part to the cooperation and good advice of my fellow staff members.

Living in such a family oriented environment can be difficult at times because you have to sacrifice much of your freedom for the common good. However, the strong family spirit of the center is a predominant reason we are able to teach successfully.  To help us work harmoniously, we engage in daily activities such as morning prayer, staff meals together, and community service.

clsass kidsThe poor and abandoned children that I teach are my friends. As the head teacher of this school, I have come to realize that the center is my home and these are my children. These children are
good and very eager to learn. However, managing children of this age (of primary I and II) is so hectic. One has to be patient,
understanding and exemplary.  As a team, we progress each day in shaping these children into good citizens.

I have had many happy moments at the center, but I would say the time COVE U.S members visited Kapeeka was my happiest.  I was a bit nervous when they first arrived, but then I heard one of them (Ms. Carolyn) calling me by my name, "Joseph." I wondered how she learned my name before seeing me!  My anxiety quickly subsided as their friendliness made me feel at ease. Our visitors stayed with us for almost a month doing a number of activities.  I personally found the COVE U.S delegates to possess many great qualities, such as devotion to work, being punctual, serving as an example to others, tolerance, and cooperation.
