Fr. Hilary, Dr. Ellen Cwick to Host Spring Meeting

Out of Africa Ad
During the summer of 2009, Ellen Cwick, principal of Vernon Hills High School, traveled to Kapeeka to attend the dedication of the primary school that Vernon Hills students and faculty had worked to fund.  Taking time to visit many Ugandan schools and children sponsored by COVE, Dr. Cwick was moved to dream that the new COVE Center school would flourish and its budding relationship with VHHS would grow.

On Wednesday, April 21, 2010, Dr. Cwick and special guest Executive Director Fr. Hilary Muheezangango will host COVE Alliance's Spring Meeting, open to everyone interested, at Vernon Hills High School.  The evening will provide an engaging forum for sharing stories and information about COVE Alliance's projects and progress.  Fr. Hilary will give a detailed update on the work of COVE Alliance in Uganda.  Dr. Cwick and several students will discuss their experiences with the high school's Candle Campaign, which to date has raised over $35,000 for the COVE Center school.

Bring a friend and join COVE Alliance for this special Spring Meeting, April 21 at 7 pm in the library at Vernon Hills High School.  There will be plenty of time for questions and refreshments will be served.  For more information, please contact Wendy Mospan.

New School and Dorm to Open This Month!

Supplies for primary school 2

Student registration and parent orientation for the new primary school at the St. Jerome COVE Center were held in January and classes began on February 1.  70% of the students attending the new school have been sponsored through COVE Alliance. The generosity of sponsors offers support and encouragement to the children as they begin their new journey at the COVE Center.

Significant progress is being made on the Center's dormitory as well.  The walls of the dormitory were completed in early January and the roof was laid on January 24.  Construction is on schedule and the dormitory is expected to be ready by February 28.  When completed, it will house up to 80 students.

The school year in Uganda runs from February through December.  Our prayers and best wishes are with all of COVE's students as they begin this new school year.

 Letter From a Sponsored Child
A child in Uganda wrote this letter to his Sponsor:

Dear Sponsor,

Feb Sponsored ChildMy name is Yiga Joseph.  I am 8 years now.  I am in baby class-nursery at a school called Victory Primary School.  I live with my grandmother at Balatira Village.

When I am home, I help my family with cleaning dishes, fetching water, sweeping the compound and digging the garden.  At school I learn English language, mathematics, science, social studies, drawing, writing, reading, and music.  I like to play with other children at school.  We get water from the bore hole.  I carry a 10 Liter Jerrycan to collect water.

My grandmother is a peasant farmer.  We grow food crops like beans, maize corn, sweet potatoes and some vegetables.

I will always communicate to you through COVE Alliance.

Best wishes from,
Yiga Joseph

Joseph is sponsored by Linnea Anderson.  He was assisted by a COVE Alliance staff member in writing this letter to his sponsor.

A Generous Gift

On behalf of COVE Alliance,  the Board of Directors wishes to express our sincere thanks to a very generous donor who recently gave a $55,000 gift.

Because COVE Alliance is a 501(c)3 charity, the value of this donation was not reduced by capital gains taxes since the shares were liquidated after they were transferred to COVE.

For more information on how to extend the value of your gift by donating non-cash assets,
please contact COVE Alliance's Treasurer
Don Dumich.

In the Spotlight
Deann Mealey

Deann Mealey
Deann Mealey is a long-time COVE volunteer who has helped organize fundraising events and prepare grant applications to fund projects in Uganda.  Deann became involved with COVE during its infancy. Before joining the organization, she taught religious education alongside Deacon Hilary at St. Mary of Vernon Church.  As Deann tells it, "One day Hilary gave a presentation on Uganda and asked if anyone was interested in helping him start a vocational school there.  A group of us met soon afterward and the rest is history!"

Today, Deann continues to receive inspiration from her fellow volunteers.  "The people involved with COVE are amazing!" she says, "They are all devoted to making a difference in the lives of the children in Kapeeka.  So much has been completed since COVE began."

Deann is currently involved with the grants committee, where she helps choose the grants COVE targets and contributes to the application process for those grants.
