PROUDLY SPONSORING HEALTH AND WELLNESS WEEK!

Learn

Hello Parents and Campers,

Kristie Lengel here from L.E.A.R.N. (Learning Exercise, Activity and the Right Nutrition) with a recap of the activities from Health and Wellness week.

I'd like to begin with my sincerest thanks to the campers for their complete cooperation in the heat of this past week's weather, you were all troopers! The week of extreme temperatures and high humidity certainly added an extra challenge to the success of the program this week, however, it does show us all that with strength, endurance and extra hydration we can all still take time to exercise under any conditions. My thanks also go out to the Rolling River ownership and staff for this opportunity and the remarkable support and respect I have received since the beginning of this endeavor.

My focus for the Health and Wellness program this week at Rolling River was to show children of all ages the importance of exercise in our everyday lives. In each class, we first learned how to find our heart rate and then increase it with a cardiovascular warm up. After, the kids completed an exercise circuit involving cardiovascular and resistance training activities such as push-ups, bicep curls, agility ladders, sit-ups, etc. And then the kids were guided through a proper stretch and encouraged to repeat daily. Lastly, I invited the children to open up with any questions they had involving exercise, injury, wellness or nutrition, and was excited to hear all the interest and knowledge the children had!

My facility, L.E.A.R.N., offers exercise programs for ages 6-17 of all shapes and sizes. We keep the classes fun and educational by using a wide variety of equipment, circuits, games and obstacles. L.E.A.R.N provides the appropriate setting for children to participate in exercise activities with safety and education in mind. Nutrition education is also a service offered at L.E.A.R.N. to help families create a healthy home.

I have opened L.E.A.R.N. as a result of working with children throughout my youth. Taking notice of the staggering challenges kids have in their daily lives to eat right, exercise and stay healthy while they are young so as not to have serious health issues as they grow older. As an athlete I have seen the importance of this in competition as well as in everyday life in order to simply feel better and live a longer healthier life.

All the best!

Kristie Lengel

Health & Wellness Week, Parent Visiting Days/Nights,Trips, Special Events

LEARN fitness

Let's Get Physical Everybody...and we sure did! All age groups participated in a week full of Health & Wellness related activities. From exercises with Kristy from L.E.A.R.N. Fitness, trampoline jumping at 5 Star Gymnastics to an interactive presentation by Dentist Rania, our campers learned about their health while simultaneously having fun!

In addition to exercising, our campers spent the week traveling to exciting places such as Adventureland, Fun Station, Rockville Centre Lanes and the optional overnight to Lake George. If that wasn't enough activity, the children were more than happy to exhibit their talents and skills during Parent Night and Day visiting. They got a kick out of interacting with their favorite people in sports & games.

Next week we are looking forward to "Rolling River Gives Back Week" where each group will be collecting coins which will be donated towards The Campmates Program, Rolling River's scholarship program with Peninsula Counseling Center and Winthrop Hospital, the location of the CIT Community Service Trip next month. Our anxiously awaited Carnival was postponed until Wednesday, July 25 when the weather will be perfect for "fun in the sun" activities!  Also get ready for the 2012 theatre season at RRDC which also begins next week; 1st Grade Show on Monday night and 2nd grade show on Thursday night.

The excitement was felt all over camp as the Skippers waited anxiously for their visiting days to begin. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday were so busy as we played soccer or t-ball, tumbled, sang and swam showing you all how much fun camp is!

We had such an amazing time and everyone was able to show off the many skills we have and the new ones we have learned

since camp has begun.

In addition to the visiting days, we celebrated Health and Wellness Week! On Thursday, the Nursery and Pre-K campers were visited by Dr. Rania, a pediatric dentist. She, along with Angie and Smiley the Dragon puppet, taught us about brushing our teeth to keep them healthy.  We counted Smiley's teeth and learned that we have 20 teeth right now. We reviewed diet and saw some of the instruments we would see at the office when we go for a check up. We even had a chance to brush Smiley the Dragon's teeth!  We all came home with a goody bag with a toothbrush and activity sheets in it. It was really great!

The Kindergartners were walked over to Five Star Gymnastics where we were able to tumble, bounce and play. We jumped into the foam pit, bounced on the trampoline and walked on the balance beam. We were shown the importance of exercise to keep our bodies healthy.

Although the Carnival was postponed due to the weather forecast, we had an awesome time this week! Check out the Rolling River website for the pictures of all the events from this week. We can't wait for next week!

WOW! What an amazing week.  All of the grades in our division journeyed out to wonderful off-campus trips.  It started off with the 3rd graders fantastic trip to Adventureland on Monday.  On Tuesday, the 4th grade visited Crow's Nest Mini Golf and ended the trip with delicious ice cream from Pip's.  On Wednesday, the 2nd grade went to Fun Station and enjoyed many rides and games.  The 1st grade went on a special bowling trip that they really enjoyed.  On Thursday, the entire division was invited to roller skate in our Rolling River's Rink- we even did roller skating limbo!

We are looking forward to next week.  Bright and early on Monday morning, some of our campers will venture off to Camp Brookwood for a special overnight trip.  We know it's going to be a beautiful day for Carnival on Wednesday.  We're also can't wait for the Lip Sync competition during Hollywood Day on Friday, 7/27.  Our 1st and 2nd graders will be performing for their families during our annual theater shows (see schedule below for dates and times).  We sent out an email today to the 1st grade campers about what to wear for the show. There will be another email sent on Monday with costumes for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders.  As you can see, the Mariners are very busy!  Again, it was great to see so many parents during our Visiting Nights.  We can't wait to see you again at the shows next week!

As always, my door is always open for any emails or conversations.  You can contact me at fran@rollingriver.com.

  lake george

What a fun-filled week the Navigators had! On Monday, we were surprised by a show with hypnotist Ronny Romm. It was so exciting to see the counselors get hypnotized and do silly things!

The Lake George overnight trip left on Tuesday for 3 days of fun away from RRDC. Our first stop was White Water rafting on the Scana River. At night we went to the Fun Spot for an evening of go-carting, laser tag, mini-golf, rollerskating and video games.

On Wednesday we spent the entire day at Six Flags Great Escape.  Then on Thursday we made one last stop at Brownstone Exploration and Discovery Park for a day of water activities before heading home. Everyone had a great time and more importantly, we were complimented numerous times about how well-mannered and well behaved the group was! For the campers who remained back on the RRDC campus, our trips to Adventureland and Aviator were a hit!

Next week the entire division is off to the Brooklyn Cyclones and Long Beach and of course we are all looking forward to CARNIVAL on Wednesday!

A reminder to all families- check your email every Friday for trip information for next week's trips.  As always, if you have any question, please feel free to email me at chrissy@rollingriver.com.

Melanie & Matt, CIT Counselors

It was such a fun week for the CITs!  On Monday we were in awe watching Ronny Romm hypnotize some of the CITs & Matt.  It's amazing what power your mind has over your body!  Several CITs traveled to Lake George during the middle of the week and enjoyed white water rafting, riding the roller coasters at Six Flags Great Escape, and tackling the obstacles at Brownstone Exploration &  Discovery Park.

It's hard to believe the first four weeks are coming to an end already.  The second four weeks looks to be even better than the first, filled with trips and special events that the CITs are sure to enjoy!  Next week we're looking forward to an exciting day watching the Brooklyn Cyclones game on Tuesday and a super fun Carnival on Wednesday!  The CITs in the Mariner Division will also be the captains of their groups for the Lip Sync Competition for Hollywood Day on Friday.  Make sure that they work with their groups and counselors to come up with a great lip sync song and dance.  Have a great weekend!

If you have any questions about the CIT program please email cit@rollingriver.com.
