Crisis Intervention

24-Hour access to Crisis Intervention for pre- and post- guardianship/adoptive families in St. Louis County.  We help families:

  1. manage immediate crises and safety plan;
  2. improve child, parent, and sibling relationships;
  3. increase family communication and self-management skills; and
  4. prevent disruption.

Training Extravaganza 

Theme: Children's Mental Health 

04.02.11 / 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

The Extravaganza is an all-day training that allows foster/adoptive/relative caregivers to receive 7.5 in-service training hours in one day, and you can bring the kids, too. The registration deadline is March 18th. All attendees will be entered into a raffle to win an XBOX and 8 games!

Childcare Lottery: Space limited to 200 adults and 100 children.

Registration forms must be received by March 18th to be included in the childcare lottery. ALL requests for childcare received by March 18th will be placed into the same lottery pool.  Registration forms will be drawn at random until the 100 childcare slots are filled.  All families who register will be notified by mail. If childcare is full, adults are still welcome to attend the workshop and receive 7.5 training hours.

Parents' Day Out

Olympiad Gymnastics in Chesterfield Valley is hosting a Parents' Day Out on Sunday, April 3rd from 2 to 4 p.m. for children ages 6 to 12. Kids will enjoy jumping on trampolines, playing in the foam pit, and tumbling while parents can treat themselves to shopping or eating in Chesterfield Valley. Space is limited. Need Someone to Read with Your Child Twice a Week?

The Coalition collaborates with the YRead program to match volunteers with foster and adopted children whose reading skills are 1 to 2 grade levels behind where they should be.  In this program, the tutor meets twice a week, for one hour each time, at a public library to read with the child. If your child is in need of a reading tutor and you are able to transport twice each week to a library in mid St. Louis County, South City, South County, or West County, please contact Shelley Thomas-Benke at 314.367.8373 x29.

Job Fair for Teens and Young Adults

04.02.11 / 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Registration Deadline March 18th
Is your teen thinking about his or her future?  Thanks to Citigroup, youth ages 16 to 20 can participate in our Third Annual Job Fair including a variety of financial literacy workshops.  The Fair will take place during the next Training Extravaganza on Saturday, April 2nd.  Phone registrations are not accepted. Click here to download a registration form.

Interactive activities and individualized instruction will include:

- Jobs: Complete a skills/interest assessment and participate in a 

  "mock" interview

- Employers' Expectations:  Learn how to find a job and create a plan

- Money:  Budgeting and preparing for the future

- Credit:  Establishing and protecting credit

 

Participants will be able to complete employment applications and speak with potential employers.  Representatives from St. Louis Community College will be available to discuss the admission and financial aid process for prospective students. Fostering Financial Success: [RE]FRESH

We're now accepting applications for our new program, Fostering Financial Success: [RE]FRESH. This is a skills training and job placement program for foster youth ages 16 to 21. Thie program will allow older youth to obtain job training and experience, demonstrate their ability to earn and save money, and finally, obtain jobs in the community.

 

Employment Skills/Job Training
Youth will learn the workings of a retail establishment in detail, including: receiving, merchandising, working the cash register, managing volunteers, customer service, inventory/stocking, marketing, and helping customers find exactly what they are looking for. Participants will take away valuable interpersonal and customer service skills that will be transferable to multiple industries.

Drama Workshop for Foster and Adopted Children

Cost:  FREE

Children's Home Society, with the help of Metro Theater Company, is offering a special seven-week drama workshop for children ages 11 to 15. Participants will explore activities that focus on collaboration, inclusion, and building non-verbal communications skills. Through improvisation techniques, students will talk about issues of concern, and help each other strategize solutions to challenges faced by the group. Registration is required.

Keeping Teens Safe During Spring Break, Prom and Graduation Season

Parents will learn practical suggestions to encourage healthy and safe behavior among teens during this panel discussion and Q&A session. Panelists include a former Rockwood student whose life was turned upside down on Prom night, Regional Support Center Coordinator of the National Council on Alcoholism & Drug Abuse, a defense attorney who works with youth and families on drug and alcohol offenses, and others.

Family Wokshop: Guardianship & Alternatives

The Family Workshop Series are designed to provide in-depth information on topics related to supporting family members with developmental disabilities. This workshop, presented by Bhavik R. Patel, Sandberg, Phoenix and von Gontard, P.C., will focus on determining when guardianship is needed, who should be a guardian and alternatives such as payees, conservatorships, trustees, powers of attorney, living wills and more. We are Stronger Than Your Violence: Celebrating Youth Strength Over Violence

2011 Children's Mental Health Conference

Strategies for Supporting Relative Caregivers of Children and Youth featuring Dr. Joseph Crumbly (Author, Family Therapist, Trainer, and Consultant). 4.25 social work credit hours pending. The purpose of this conference is to provide professionals methods of supporting and intervening with kinship caregivers and their families, and to offer caregivers coping strategies to manage the family dynamics and emotional issues specific to kinship care.
