Coalition to Open New Foster and Adoption Resource Center
At every opportunity, the Foster & Adoptive Care Coalition responds to gaps in services for foster and adoptive families with innovative programs designed to address their specific needs.
Over and over we have heard requests for a one-stop resource center for foster and adoptive families and youth – a community gathering place where families can access much-needed services like training, support groups, recruitment services, one-on-one advocacy, workshops, respite services, and more.
We are excited to announce that this Center will become a reality! It will be located at 1750 S. Brentwood Blvd., in the Joseph H. White Building. The Center will provide support and programming for more than 10,000 people each year!
The new location will allow the Coalition to expand its programming to include 24-hour crisis intervention and expanded recruitment services. The new Center will include a larger resale store to offer our families high-quality, low-cost clothing, generate income through sales to the general public, and provide on-the-job training and volunteer opportunities for youth. This month, the Coalition is kicking off a $700,000 Building Initiative to renovate the new space. We invite you to partner with us to open the Center as soon as possible! Please consider a financial gift today. For more information, please contact Melanie Scheetz at 314.367.8373.
The names of donors ($100 or more) will be beautifully displayed on a specially-designed column, which will flow between the two floors of the Foster and Adoption Resource Center.
24-Hour Crisis Intervention for St. Louis County Adoptive & Pre-Adoptive Families
Thanks to a generous grant from the St. Louis County Children’s Service Fund, the Coalition will now offer 24-hour Crisis Intervention services to adoptive families in St. Louis County! For more information on the Crisis Intervention program, please contact Dawn Milburn, Lead Family Intervention Specialist at 800.FOSTER.3 or dawnmilburn@foster-adopt.org. As of August 2010, there were 1,492 families eligible for the Adoption Preservation and Crisis Intervention program (Missouri Children's Division, 2010). Citi generously funded the new on-the-job training program for foster youth, reinforced with financial education and a job fair!

16 Foster Children Need Birthday Buddies!
When foster parents need help supplying birthday presents to their foster children, they can apply to our Birthday Buddy program. Currently there are 16 children with August or September birthdays hoping that a generous child, adult, or group will be their Birthday Buddy. Can you help?
If you are able to sponsor the birthdays of one of these youth, please click here or contact Karen Herrington, Birthday Buddy co-Coordinator at 314.698.1716.
Volunteer Opportunity For The Whole Family
It’s not easy finding volunteer opportunities for the whole family. The Coalition has the perfect opportunity for you! Occasionally we need individuals who drive minivans, pick-up trucks, or other large vehicles who can pick up a donated twin bed from a donor’s home and deliver it to a foster child’s new home. If you’re interested in receiving email alerts when help is needed, please contact Shelley Thomas-Benke at shelleythomasbenke@foster-adopt.org or 314.367.8373.
Volunteers Needed at the KidStore
On Saturday, September 25th, the KidStore will switch out the summer clothing, which is currently on the store racks, and display the fall/winter clothing. Volunteers are needed from 9:30 a.m. to noon and from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. to switch out the inventory. We'll also need a few volunteers with vans or pick-up trucks to recycle the summer clothing. If you're able to help, please contact Shelley Thomas-Benke at shelleythomasbenke@foster-adopt.org or 314.367.8373 x29. Youth over the age of 13 may volunteer with an adult.
