MAY MARKET NEWS

The Market season is well underway now as the days become warmer and (hopefully) the weekends remain dry and pleasant.  With so many beautiful, colorful fresh flowers in bloom and Mother's Day just around the corner, we start this month with a Flower Arranging demonstration by Ker Cheng of "Cheng's Summer Blooms" on Saturday, May 1st in the Entertainment area.

Mother's Day is Sunday,  May 9th.  Our vendors have a wide range of wonderful gift ideas for you to select from, so we hope you choose the VFM as your Mother's Day shopping destination.

The VFM will be holding a special Mother's Day raffle on May 8 and May 9 with the drawing held at 2:30 PM on Sunday, May 9. You do not have to be present to win.  Tickets will be sold at the Information Booth for $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00.  The raffle prize will be a basket of goodies just for Mom.

Aaron Guerra of  Northwest Culinary Institute will present a Cooking Demonstration on Saturday, May 15. There will be another Cooking Demonstration on Saturday, May 29.

A Composting Demo by Northwest Composting will be held on Saturday, May 22.  If you've wanted to learn how to compost, now is your opportunity.

ready to leave

Some Folks Like 'em and some don't and while we do understand the feelings of those few people who have voiced their concerns, until further notice, the Vancouver Farmers Market will continue to be a pet friendly market.

With the recent newspaper publicity this issue has stirred up, we do ask all dog owners who come to our Market to be very diligent about keeping your pets on secure, short leashes to make sure other customers don't accidentally trip over and seriously injure themselves on an extended leash or your pet. Also please keep an eye on your pets so they do not get near any vendor food products, and be mindful of small children near your pets. Remember, if you have children to teach them to ask the owner permission first to pet dogs that they don't know.

If you do forget to bring extra clean up bags with you to pick up after your pets when necessary, extra bags are available at the Information Booth and from vendors if you ask.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

This month's recipe, entitled Slovenian Egg Pancakes,  would be great for a Mother's Day brunch served with a side of sausage from Premium Smoked Meats and fresh ground coffee from Columbia River Coffee Co

The recipe was handed down to me (Marilyn Estenes, VFM vendor of Silver River Designs and  newsletter editor) from my maternal grandmother who came to the U.S. from the former Yugoslavia in the early 1900's.

These "pancakes" are so delicious!  They have more of an egg taste than a traditional crepe.

           2 cups  sifted flour
           1/2 teaspooon salt
           1 tablespoon sugar
           3 well beaten eggs
           4 cups milk

Mix and sift dry ingredients.  Combine eggs and milk; add flour mixture, beating until smooth.  Bake quickly in greased (small amount of melted butter) hot griddle on stove top, cooking one large cake at a time.  Cakes should be on the thin side.  When  they start to get a little brown on underside, flip over.

Spread with a small amount of your favorite jam (I prefer apricot), roll up and dust with powdered sugar.

These pancakes can be refrigerated up to several days and reheated in a microwave oven for 2-2 l/2 minutes.

Enjoy!
